ORDINARY West Australians are going hungry and turning to charities for food handouts.

Charities say sole parents, working poor, contractors and people who lost jobs in corporate collapses are among the new stream of people queuing for help.

Doug Paling, general manager of Foodbank WA, which operates as a go-between for food donors and more than 400 community agencies, estimated that about 200,000 West Australians sought food from a charity at least once last year.

WA Council of Social Service acting executive director Leanne Barron said agencies, which distributed food via soup kitchens, hostels and emergency relief hampers, reported many clients seeking assistance for the first time.

"A lot of people turn up and need food to tide themselves over," Ms Barron said. "Often they can't get into agencies because other people are experiencing complex debt-related problems."

An ACOSS survey of 112 WA community agencies last financial year showed they helped 531,299 applicants, often with food. Pressure on agencies meant almost 20,000 of those who sought help had to be turned away.

National nutritional surveys estimate up to 16,000 WA schoolchildren, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, turn up to school each day on an empty stomach.

Anglicare chief Ian Carter said most people had no idea about how or why families struggled

People think they are bludgers - and if they tried harder they would be OK," he said. "But there is a really high percentage of people in genuine hardship who have nowhere else to go through no fault of their own."

St Vincent de Paul WA president Brian Bull said people dealing with a tragedy or unexpected debt were among those needing one-off assistance. Others, like homeless people with mental health problems, needed constant support.

Sorry spent Wednesday morning playing golf at Burswood and the rest of the day down the moon and sixpence pub , weather was over cast all day but not a bad day for a work day.
Friday got a suite booked at OB City hotel only hotel built next to the beach , might spend the weekend at the soup kitchens if I get to the front and get served.
