It isn't free here, it ranges in price from about $18.00 to $40.00 for a few months. I get it cheaper being from UK. I don't think it is free with medicare but I don't know, I don't have medicare.

in reply to that Thyroxine mediacation.. you have to pay I'm afraid..
My fiance is aussie and she has to pay about $5 for it and she is on speacial mediace benifits..
from the looks of things you don't get half the stuff you would normally expect to get free In Oz as you would in the Uk
wouldn't want to be dieing of anything would you... you would have to pay to the grave..

My advice is stock up before you go, I have about two years supply of insulin, enough needles until I die, enough hypostop to last a few years.
Testing strips are quite expensive in Oz so try and get as many as you possibly can.
Its an expensive place to live as a diabetic, when you weigh up in UK I get free eye checks see the doc a couple of times a year for free feet checks etc. etc.
Actually think if I got a "serious illness" I would not want to live in Oz. !!
As it happens I am having second thoughts now with less than 8 weeks to go.
Good link for diabetes medical care, organ donor etc on here. http://www.movingdownunder.co.uk/files/medical.php

Why are you having second thoughts, because of health issues or is anything else troubling you?

Health issues not really a problem, the lack of work, currency rate, etc. etc.

What work do you both do? There seem to be quite a few jobs around if you look in the right place. I got a job within a fortnight without really looking but maybe that's unusual, it seems to be who you know sometimes not what you know, that's why sites like this are so good. Tell us what you do and we'll keep our eyes peeled and tell you what's around if poss.
Exchange rate, not much you can do about it. We lost out but I decided as long as we got 2.5 plus I'd be happy.

I'd turn my hand to anything (within reason!) if need be to start with to get my foot in the door.
Working in childcare out of school care at the moment, was in school in the UK.

I am in (was) IT and its nearly impossible for work here Perth is alot worse, mainly age against me on that one.
My wife is a social worker specialising in child care. So she will probably OK.
Also I am a qualified Baker & Confectioner so its always a possibility to go back to, not sure I want to work 40 hours a week for peanuts though.
