Exclamation Birmingham to Brisbane excess baggage costs

Just thought I'd put this on here in case it might be of interest to anyone. We are flying with emirates, return flights so we don't qualify for the 40kg allowance with our luggage, just the bog standard 20kg. I phoned Emirates today just to enquire how much it would be if we did go over our allowance, we were thinking of bringing an extra case.

I was told it would cost £32.52 PER KILO!!!! So for an extra case weighing 20 kilos you're looking at about £650

Would be cheaper to buy someone a ticket and get them to bring a case of your gear with them

We've just got back from our validation trip with Emirates. They were great, really relaxed about luggage.

We're bikers and took our stuff with us - helmet, boots, heavy leather jackets and trousers etc. We more or less hit 20kg without anything else. Both 24kg on the way out, I was 28kg, hubby was a shade under 30kg on the way back (we came back separately). No problem at all with three different check-in staff.

At check-in at Gatwick, the lass even said that their policy was to allow 28kg, even though they publicised 20kg.

Obviously no guarantees, but as long as you don't push it too far, you will probably be fine. Might help if you join the frequent flyer club (which also enables you to select your seat online prior to check-in online being available to the public). Also, they can't take bags weighing more than 32kg in any case due to health and safety (baggage handlers backs).

Check out Excess Baggage Co - they will accept bags at many airports, can send them by air freight, and its much much cheaper than the rates for excess with the airlines. They will all charge about £30 a kilo.

Hi Clippies
we validated with emirates back in May - at the time i said about losing our excess baggage when we finally emigrated and i was told that when we finally book our one way ticket (which we did in September) to phone them and tell them that it we were emigrating. I duly did this and after sending over a fax of our visas in the passport got 40kgs for all four of us. so try ringing them again.

Hello

Lol, yes we do but it was only extra couple of hundred quid to go return so we thought we might as well because at least then we've got an emergency flight in the bag if that makes sense *cough glastonbury cough*

Using an excess baggage company, 2 big suitcases (70kg total weight) will cost you about £280 to get it from your home to Australia, and about £120 to clear customs and get delivered to your door (if near-ish to the airport)

Use anyone except London Baggage Co.

Thank you

It's more than we want to pay to be honest, we just wanted to stick a few tools and some extra clothes in the case as we're not shipping anything out. It'll cost us more to pay for the extra baggage than the extra baggage is worth though So we'll have to just stick to our 20kgs

Any friends that would be willing to bung a few things in their container for you?
