Is the bird flu new to Europe? Maybe thats why theres all the panic

Just wondering because bird flu seems to have been around with australias neighbours (asian countries) since at least 2002, more cases in 2003 and 2004, many cases around us now too. Perhaps after 4 years of it people have become less scared of it.

Plus we import food from those countries, nobody seems worried although there was a horrific report about 3 weeks ago on fruit and veg arriving from asia contaminated (this was tested at our supermarket stage not customs) with human, chicken and animal manure

I'm no scientist or migratory bird expert for that matter, but does the panic coincide with the time of year when birds migrate and the sudden outbreak in Croatia, Romania, Turkey and Greece. It seems to be spreading very quickly between countries in Europe at the moment (although geographically it may not be that big an area).

Found one of the few articles I have seen about bird flu here, its very aussie in content starting out with focusing on australia having invented the drug and being the first to produce it (amuses me no matter what it is we have to be first )

But it mentions in the UK there is mass panic and there has been an appeal for calm
It's true; people are going completely bonkers, for some strange reason.

Call me cynical, but I wonder is GlaxoSmithKline has put the price up yet.
This whole thing already highlights the power of pharaceutical companies. If the pandemic did hit I wonder what it would take for countries to say "b*gger the patent" we're gonna make this stuff. Plus given the world wide shortage and demand for this, it seems mad that GSK hasn't starting mass producing elsewhere months ago.

That seems to show a considerable improvement in mortality rates as it's progressed.
