Default Beware when crossing roads in Cities!

I'm in a right old Grump today! :curse:
I walk to work as I live in the City (Brisbane) doing my bit for Saving the environment, reducing my carbon footprint blah de blah! However, upon crossing Edward Street to the Main Queen Street Mall, (as I do every day) on this occasion the man turned red as I was crossing the road.

As I proceeded up Queen Street Mall - I was 'arrested' for crossing whilst a red man was flashing. Police were hiding around the corner catching unsuspecting "Criminals" I was then issued with a ticket and a $40 fine.

I said with all the crime in Brisbane, surely there is something more beneficial you could be doing! At least he apologised and said he is only following orders. ( But didn't the Nazis say that??)

Anyway - that's my rant over for the day! So if you're in the city be careful - only cross on the green man and look out for hidden cops and avoid getting fined!

I've heard stories of tourists seeing this going on and deliberately jaywalking to get the fine notice as a souvernir to PROVE that police really do issue tickets!

Is there anything to stop you from not having any ID on you and therefore giving a name and address that cannot be verified?
Surely a $40 fine made out to:

Name: John Smith
Address: 23 Feasible Road
Holland Park
Brisbane 4123

would be harmless enough?

Do "the powers that be" not realise the damage this does to public relations?

Same happened to my OH here in Brisbane CBD and the fat policeman made him walk back to other side of road and do it again!

Couldn't believe my OH did this (although he did briefly consider doing a runner; policeman would never have caught him). I certainly wouldn't comply to an order like that!

Heard from a cyclist that latest is that plods are stopping cyclists and checking whether they have bells or not. If not; they are fining them.

For goodness sake can they not deal with real issues; target some of the maniac drivers that endanger pedestrians, cyclists and other road users instead of easy targets such as pedestrians and cyclist.

LOL - Yeah I wish I could have been that sharp at the time! I think i'm too honest - mind you I struggled to remember my real address when he interrogated... err asked me. I would have more respect for the QLD Police if they had just given a me a warning. But I agree this does nothing for their public relations. Instead it is blatent revenue raising.

Hee hee my old chum......you should know by now car is king in Brisbane.....how very dare you use the road too!

As a former Brisbane cyclist and having been pulled over myself, I can confirm that Qld police are indeed wasting their time lurking behind trees etc waiting to pounce on unsuspecting people operating under their own steam.

Just as well there is no other crime in Brisbane requiring attention eh? Oh, hold on.........

Well it takes a bit of getting used to.......if you're crossing the road when a car turns into the same road, people tend to give way to you and gesture to you to cross - it happens all the time, even when cars should have right of way. After years of getting blasted by car horns, or nearly mown down as a cyclist....it's all quite civilised!

Gosh that's unbelievable - I don't think I could cope with that. I'd Better stick with the car ravaged backwaters of Brisbane, etherwise I might go crazy.

Lol Drivers giving way to people - you're having a laugh!!

My advice don't give a false name and adress, it is a criminal offence and if you get caught you will have a criminal record for the rest of your life making it hard to get a job or travel overseas just becasue you did'nt want to pay $40 bucks the same cost as of a couple of pizzas of an outing to the cinema.

Pity they don't give more tickets to the cars in Brisbane we always notice how everyone seems to disobey the road laws when we visit.

Come to Melbourne car drivers where they hide and get you and don't tell us when we are coming up to a speed camera.

They do have blitzes on J walking in Melbourne though from time to time.

Well actually pedestrians have right of way in this situation here that's why, if a car doesn't stop they're breaking the law.

I know, same rule applies in the UK Highway Code.

http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/index/tra..._junctions.htm

But more often then not in the situation in the pic in the link (rule 170) up in Brisbane you'll cop an earful from the driver.

What I notice in Melbourne is that even when you haven't started to cross, people stop and gesture you to go. Nice n'all, but personally I think they shouldn't - recipe to get rear ended!

I have driven through that intersection hundreds of times and you always get some knob running across the road on the red man so I can understand why they're issuing tickets. But the cops in Brisbane are over zealous idiots at times and don't consider the each individual situation before issuing a ticket for anything.

This is how the government gets its stimulus money back.
