Which is better? Toploader or frontloader!

Well, here we finally are in Oz...and now the nitty gritty begins. Once we've our house sorted we will need to buy a washing machine, so which is better, front or top loader, and why?!

Thanks in advance x

Re: Which is better? Toploader or frontloader!

  • Front Loaders take longer to run a wash cycle. Terrible for those people who stand at the washing machine waiting for it to finish.
  • Front Loaders tend to have smaller wash load capacity
  • Front Loaders don't tie up the washing, the same way that top loaders with an agitator do.
  • Front Loaders, with their gentler wash cycle do not damage the clothes as much.
  • Front Loaders use less water than a top loader.
  • Top loaders will let you add extra items to the wash after it has started.

and finally.....

Some of the newer design top loaders are being advertised as being as good as the top loaders.

Hence, the top loader manufacturers must agree that the original design top loaders were not as good... :D

Re: Which is better? Toploader or frontloader!

Our Fisher & Paykel top loader finally died a year ago, so I went through the exercise of top vs front loader (just to make my Aussie OH happy, they seem very attached to top loaders here ).

Definitely a front loader - we went for a Bosch 6.5 kg, 1200 rpm model, with an impressive range of programmes. It's rated 4.5 out of 5 for water usage, 4 out of 6 for power consumption. It's much better than the Miele we tried, although a noisier spin.

Try looking at http://www.productreview.com.au/ for all the different brands and models - it's surprising how many well-known brands are given a pasting.

Most have utility rooms or basements here, rarely have the washing machine in the kitchen

I got a utility but have a kitchen worktop over the washer and tumbler with a fitted cupboard for the detergents and stuff.

My mother in law had a top loader which was older than me she swore by it, but i just thought it was a similar sort of conflict that VHS had over Betamax, oh and the frontloader won that marketing battle too lol

I've never tried a front loader so went with what I knew! Plus, at the time we got a government $250 water saving rebate:thumbsup: Got our Samsung on sale at the Good Guys for $430 then received the rebate.

My wife is a front loader convert as when she left the States they didn't do anything but top loaders. Front loaders are much easier on the clothes and seem to clean them better. She hates going home for visits and doing laundry now due to the top loaders.

Here in WA we got $150 water rebate on our front loader, but I think they've stopped that now.

Top loader!

I love how you can add stuff to it if you forget. Can't do that with a front loader once the door locks. Believe me i've tried

Also you could spend all flipping day trying to get through a few loads of washing on a front loader. The longest cycle on my top loader is 40 mins. When I went home last year I couldn't believe how bloody long a wash took on my dads front loaded.

Also top loaders are easier on you physically, no squatting on the floor or bending over too much.

I nearly always use the low water usage unless it is a large wash. I find even on low it uses a lot of water anyhow.

I used to think top loaders didn't get your clothes as clean as a front loader but after 5 years now I don't notice anymore, or my standards have slipped.

Anyhow, a load of washing done in 40 min is always going to win by me.

My front loader has a countdown timer on the display and does a quick wash(comes out sopping wet) in 29 mins and if you want it almost dry a quick 1400 spin cycle for 11 mins after that. And this cleans all but the heavily soiled, which even on a full cycle is 1h 35
Fair doos a full 90 degree cottons wash with pre wash is 3h 12m but by god yer towels come out like they do on the adverts :)

I'm another Front-loader fan. I have a 30 degree wash cycle that takes 30 mins, I have a quick 1 hour 60 degree wash too.

I didn't like the top loader we had in our prev rental, the only advantage was being able to add things you have forgotten. The wash itself was no where near as good.

Welcome to Australia x

Re: Which is better? Toploader or frontloader!

Well I know you've already opted for it Jen, but I'm just going to agree: definitely frontloader. I had to rely on mate's toploader when I first arrived. I spent 15 mins at a time untangling my washing (not joking) and toploaders wreck clothes pretty quickly. This is especially a factor when you're buying clothes over here, because unfortunately they're not so well made as you'll have been used to.

Re: Which is better? Toploader or frontloader!

I'd only ever used front loaders in the UK and our rental apartment here has a top loader. I think the top loader is rubbish at actually cleaning the clothes - the cycle is very quick and good if things just need freshening up. But, they don't get any actual dirt or marks out. I seem to be spending a fortune on stain removers.

(Guess it depends how often your dribble dinner down your t-shirts ...)

Good Guys and take your RACQ card for 12% off the price.
Cash discounts are given for cash OR credit card.

Get prices from Good Guys, Clive Peters, Clive Anthony's and Harvey Norman, play them against each other for the best price.

Jen, if you have a few things to buy you should get va good deal if you buy them all at once with the good guys.

We bought about 5 items when we arrived and saved 2k on the marked prices

Another frontloader fan here as well. We have a Bosch one.

If you can, shop around. We looked at Retravision, Good Guys, Rick Hart, and Harvey Norman. We found buying therm all in the same shop was not the cheapest option. We ended up with the fridge-freezer from the Good Guys, the washing-machine and phone from Rick Hart, and the TV and DVD recorder from Retravision.

For us, three of the shops were in the same centre, i.e. we could walk from one to the other and the 4th shop was just over the road. So, it wasn't too much hassle to check out all four.

Another vote for toploader, Bosch, Goodguys.

Mine has a 15 minute "refresher" cycle that is good for doing odd things I'd normally hand-wash, and more cycle combinations than I know what to do with. I wash most things at 30C these days, with eco-friendly products, and they wash just fine.

Yes mine too. Perfect for most stuff. If I bump up the temp a bit it takes 45 mins for more soiled stuff:thumbsup:

Front loader!!!!

Top loader are horrible, they ruin your clothes.
Front loaders have a handwash cycle....for that alone they are worth their weight in gold.
My front loader (fIsher and Paykel) has a quick wash cycle (30 mins) and a daily load cycle which is about 45 mins, as well as the longer more intense cycles for bedsheet, towels etc.
I would never use a top loader again for love nor money.

Samsung J845 front loading washing machine

  • The Stop and Add function allows you to stop the washing process, open the door and place any forgotten articles into the wash. The built-in sensors will detect also the level of water, so that the door can be opened only when the water is at a safe level.
  • When all you have is a half load, SAMSUNG brings you the half-load option.
  • Quick wash option - 30 minutes

Same here. All of the affordable machines in Canada were top loaders (water hogs). And our top loaders were massive compared to the Aussie ones.

I love our front loader. The only downside is the small capacity. But aside from that, I'd never go back...

And mine also has "quick wash," daily wash, whatever...about a dozen cycle choices...
