Just been chuckling about you getting the ball sent over for your birthday, I want my mum to send me white dishcloths from Wilko's as I can't find them here. Ooh, the excitement of being in your 30's!!

On the wash powder front, I used (I think its called) Surf, tropical sort of smell (I dunno, its in a bright pink box). You can get top and front load versions. I brought my front loader from UK and am SO glad I did after having to use the laundrette till the container arrived!

Our 'Hire Pack' contained a toploader so we just had to make do, we left the frontloader in the house for the tenants, it was 7 years old and still going strong, but the letting agent decided it best we 'gift' it to the tenants, so if it broke, they'd have to replace it themselves. The guy in Good Guys was recommending an LG this avo, it even had a pause button, BRILLIANT....he said I could use what was left of the toploader stuff in it, but to only use half of the recommended amount for the toploader. Can't wait to have a frontloader again, my clothes just haven't felt even remotely clean since we got here....

I agree. I think toploaders just rinse you clothes, not wash.

Bosch or Miele are the best.

This site gives you an idea of what to avoid - look at which makes have all the problems.... (a UK site with an Australasian section)

Add AEG to that list, one of the best machines I have had.

Where I live now in England we have a communal laundry with 3 front loaders and I have noticed that nobody washes in cold water and also that the various washes take a good hour unless you put the machine on a speed wash.

Now in Oz - I always used cold water and as I recall my toploader used to take about 1/2 hour per wash.

Maybe that's the difference in the quality of the wash? Longer cycles and hot water? And I do remember reading somewhere that frontloaders were "kinder" to your clothes.

'Radiant' with some washing soda thrown in, followed by a rinse in 'Cuddly' blue fabric conditioner.

Still miss that Comfort/ Lenor smell on my clean Laundry.
