Hi,

Having opened my NAB account in preparation for my move to Perth in October I went to transfer some cash from my UK account to be informed of a £10 charge.

As I'll be moving cash back and forth I'd like to avoid this in the long term and was just wondering if anyone can recommend any fee-free international / offshore / expat accounts?

I consistently use currencyonline.com. They seem to have the best rates and charge just $12 for a transfer. There are others, if you send large amounts best with someone else but I can't remember the name. By large amounts I mean over $2000. I just send $1000 back every time I get paid. It does take a week or so to set the account up due to anti-money laundering security checks etc so do it sooner rather than later.

HSBC Premier ...... instant transfers with a decent rate..... if there is anything easier with a decent rate, I'd like to know.

I've heard this is pretty good also, unfortunately not everyone is elegibile for a HSBC Premier account.

True .... you need to have some money with them. Kind of works if you are moving country, you have some savings or the proceeds of a house sale you are not willing to take with you.

You maybe able to buy it with an annual fee ..... not sure on that though.

£7 or $15 fee and only a couple of cents to the squid below the tourist rate of exchange.

I think Citibank might have some good fee free options...Citi to Citi though I assume.

Looks like they might be able to offer assistance with opening up an account overseas too. I have Citibank Plus here and it's a great account.

The rates I get with Citibank Plus for international transactions are excellent. No monthly fee either.

Citibank will sell you a squid at $0.5972

Tranzfers will sell you a squid at $.06013 plus their £7 or $15 fee

UKForex/OzForex excellent and can recommend - no new account needed, just transfer from your existing UK Account to Oz Account. Fee free but of course they might build a little fee into the exchange rate they offer. They offered a good competitive rate when I used them FWIW.

we have a Citibank account in both UK and AU. The transfers are immediate and at a reasonable rate with no transfer commission / charges other than the rate loading.

I also have an account with XE Trade - this took a while to set up (anti-money laundering, etc.) but once up and running, a transfer can be effected within a couple of days in either direction.

+1 for Tranzfers. They're extremely quick with paying funds (1.5 days max) used them for 7 years and no trouble. Ozforex also.

We have First Direct in UK and HSBC here in Australia.
$10.00 per transaction on any limit.
