Default Best suburbs to live around Melbourne and near a good beach.

We ( Wife, myself & 11 month old daughter ) are moving to Melbourne late June and are looking to settle in one of the suburbs outwith Melbourne's city centre. We are looking for an area with some expats and also a maximum of 25 km from Melbourne. We have been thinking of Mordialloc and surrounding areas. Can anyone direct us on where we should be looking?

Thanks

Hi there
Don't forget it's 1am in Melbourne so most of the Melburnians are in bed ...altho Bordy is a local who's usually online at this time.

I don't know about the residential side of Mordialloc but I used to cycle down to Mordy every week from the city (down Beach Rd). There are some lovely beaches around that way.

Good luck

Thanks for your response and hope the wee one is sleeping!

Are there any other suburbs you could suggest?

Can you suggest any other suburbs other than Mordialloc. We are looking for somewhere with a good cafe culture and good amenities. We are also looking to settle close to a decent beach and probably have a budget of around 500K. We have been looking at Mentone, Parkdale & Aspendale but not sure what amenities these places have.

Your info is very much appreciated

Well you seem to have done your homework, the suburbs you mention are all good. For good cafe culture you could look at Mornington but its maybe to far from CBD for you.
Otherwise look on other side of the bay around Williamstown.

Beaumaris and Sandringham are both nice suburbs, as is Black Rock. Cafe culture abounds in Hampton and Brighton, although these are a bit more expensive. Depends on what size house you are looking for really...but all of the above are very close to the beach and have really good local shopping. There are also good train links into the CBD, as well as being close to the Nepean Highway if you want to drive...

Shane Warnes house in Brighton might be up for sale shortly. Think you might need more than your $500K though.

Out of interest: are any of these areas "family friendly"? We are a family of four; two kids aged 6 months and 2.5 years who will be moving to Melbourne from Norway/Europe in June. We were thinking of Mornington, but would hate the long commute!

Any ideas?

It would be worth the commute to live in Mornington though.

Do you have to work in the CBD?

Well, not exactly CBD, but on St. Kilda Road. I'm transferring internally and have accepted the offer from my new boss in Singapore (!). We have been looking for a few places in Mt. Eliza .. looks just too good to be true. I don't mind commuting, but would love to spend some time with the kids as well .. besides during the weekends.

Any idea how it would be to live in those areas and work in St. Kilda? Worth it .. or .. just "bust"?!

Thanks btw!

We are in the same dilemma as you. Husband would probably be commuting to St Kilda Rd again so we are looking for a suburb that is far enough out so as not to feel 'hemmed in' by the urban sprawl, whilst being an acceptable commuting distance. We lived in Kew before - lovely suburb but I'd like to live further out next time (nearer the Bay or countryside). Even from Kew, getting to St Kilda Rd could be a 45 min drive in rush hour. Friends have said the Nepean Highway can be quite slow coming into St Kilda Rd during rush hour. Would be interesting to hear from anyone here who does that trip in rush hour.

Good luck (we too like Mt Eliza)

I have lived this side of Melbourne since 1976.
Cheltenham/Mentone/Parkdale/mordy are all family areas
all within 35 min train to the city.
Cheltenham has Southland the biggest shopping centre
in Australia.
If you go 10min closer to the city you will have to pay double {Brighton}.
Anybody have any questions please feel free to ask.
