In fact, the majority of the time the weather was grey overcast with mild temperatures.
I did a lot of hiking around the UK (and Ireland) it was considerably more pleasant than anything approaching summer conditions here.

As Billy Connolly said, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Re the weather - went to the chemist earlier, a 15 minute walk - for that I daubed sun tan lotion over my arms and legs, ears, neck and face. Put on a hat and set off into the sweltering heat. Oh for just slinging on a coat and scarf!

Reading all the above posts, in Melbourne we don't seem to be as affected by the negatives mentioned here. Just an observation.

Yup, true, but most of them have to go elsewhere to make their mark, many of them only call Australia home but dont actually live here! That's the whole point - small pond, the world is much larger and richer in experience.

The overwhelming majority go to either the UK or the US. Peter 'I still call Australia home' Allen lived and died in America with a broad American accent.

From our perspective, looking at the two extremes, the summer in Australia is a better option for going outside. Even on the days when it's in the high 30s, the early morning or at dusk we can bring the kids to the park when it's "only" 25 to 29C or something. There was no point during the Canada in winter when it was -30C that it would miraculously warm up to -10 for a few hours so the kids could go out and play for half an hour in the playground (digging the piles of snow off the equipment). At least not for those of us unfortunate enough to reside outside of the chinook areas.

Australia suits us better and this is one of the reasons.
