I'd be skipping the Dockland and St Kilda Rd, soul-less places with minimal amenities.

South Yarra, really nice place to live but not so much of a single scene, moving towards Prahran, Windsor, St Kilda etc would be better for that. Also look at Elwood or even Albert/Middle Park areas.

Or the other side of town which I'm not sure about, Fitzroy, Colingwood etc, always seems busy there with loads of pubs, cafes etc.

Even Richmond could be good too, but only the area around Bridge Rd, or Swan St.
