While we're on this thread, would anybody know of a good employment consultant or recruitment agent in Victoria that works on behalf of the job seeker and not the employer - someone who even works on a no job/no fee basis? If there is no-one like this here, looks like a major gap in the market to me!!

Seen as I'm Mrs Homesick personified, to actually see The Dandenongs, Olinda, Templestowe....oh, and those beautiful areas where Mr & Mrs Badge and Hevs live....gorgeous! A little piece of me felt so at home

Dandenong reminds me of Birmingham, only smaller and even a bit tattier.

We have been lucky with jobs, we both got the first ones we applied for. HUP did some networking before we left and that stood us in good sted when we got here as one of the companies asked him for a phone call once he got here. He phoned, interviewed and got the job.

Dandenong Main Street (Lonsdale Rd/Princes Highway?) Actually looks like one of those depressing 1970's concrete identikit UK High Streets, you could put up a 'Currys' 'BHS' 'Boots' and 'M&S' sign and wouldn't know you had actually travelled 12,500 miles. And it's the only place over here I've noticed groups of Chav type lifeforms.

Only thing worth visiting Dandenong for is Rob's British Butcher when you feel like some good Pommie Bangers to put on the barbie. Bit like Mad Max, load the family into the Ute with plenty of guns, bust into Dandenong, get the loot and shoot your way out again as quickly as possible. And don't stop at the traffic lights if you don't have locking wheel nuts

The Dandenongs are beautiful, take a trip up through the huge leafy forest to Olinda and Sassafras, up Mount Dandenong. The tea shop in Sassafras is amazing, hundreds of types of loose leaf tea on sale from all over the place the smell in there is enough to make it worth a visit. And they sell Yorkshire Tea if you really get homesick!!

I am in the IT industry and have been since I got back from the Pacfic and Indian Ocean areas in the early 1980s after working out that Developing Nation stuff was stuffed. After a decade or so in the IT world I decided to get out. I received a fairly handsome sum helping to ease the passage

After a while I decided that no other industry offered me the opportunity to do what I wanted to do like I had done in IT, not exercise my brain too much nor get my hands dirty. So I tried to bop back into IT.

I must have seen a dozen recruiting mob and they were all in the "tits on a bull" category. So I went out and found myself a low paying job and things fell into place from then on.

Keep trying though, you may find some who are honest and can see beyond their own self importance.

Anybody who's in and around the IT world should know that IT recuritment agents are all of the same breed the world over. I've always treated them with the same mercenary attitude that they treat us with.. As a result I've been quite fortunate with getting jobs.. We'd only been in the Melb area 2 days and I'd had 3 offers.. Pretty good going I think..

The wife is re-skilling and as a result has no experience, shes been getting no real luck generally - however of late she'd chanced upon a possible position via an agent who mis-represented her to thier client (perphaps all recruitment agents across all industries are the same ?? LOL)... So it may well work out to her benefit after all..

Certainly here you ever have to have lots of specialised experience or a lucky break in order to get work..

Keep it up - it will drop together - eventually.

(not aimed at you 65million, never seen you before, I just maintain that most migrants should always try as close in to the city centre, when they first arrive because that is where the jobs are, Just whilst they establish. A desperate employer around here, is paying Motor Mechanics 100 bucks just to turn up for an interview, as a motor mechanic, if the papers are to be beleived that is)

But Ozzie neither Gadget man or us live anywhere near the city center and we all got jobs easily..... Did the OP say he wasn't prepared to travel into the city??

Working and living are 2 entirely different things arn't they??

I've just came back from visiting a Aussie freind, (in fact she is a divorcee). She has had to move out, because she cannot afford to buy in Melbourne. The interesting part about this is where she has moved too. A Place called Chewton, just this side of Castlemaine, She has bought a house, on about 1.5 acres, Tree'd, lots of erm, orchard trees, pines, populars, elms, ambers, all garden type trees, about 5 ponds, Green, pub just up the road, 3 beds two toilets, Fantastic place actually. It does need work, especially in the expansive gardens, It's even got a decent artists double story artist studio in the garden. Hence it was a steal, at below 200,000 dollars. My point here is A. there are very few people up there, that are willing to travel one hour twenty mins or less to get to a job in Melbourne. B. It's only as far out "time wise" as Cranbourne, I can think of dozens of locations over this side of town that are like that, with cheap houses.

I personally think that job is more important to lifestyle than where one lives. That maybe where I differ to a lot of people on here, However the fact that prices are so cheap in these lesser known places on the fringes of Melbourne. Perhaps points to the fact that people do not generally want to live where there is no work.

Oh well we've got another place we can go and get our country fix now.
