Default beach bum lifestyle - this ones for surfers

Gidday! Over the next 6 months I plan to retire to OZ for the easy life. Im a kiwi. (No, I wont be drawing dole ). My only requirement is good and consistent surf. Im thinking Burleigh Heads, but since I have never been to Melbourne or Perth can somebody fill me in on the surf scene there as well. Thanks.

Gnarloo, WA, actually, probably not a retirement place. Margaret river area might be best for living and surfing

I've surfed Burleigh Heads once (Gold Coast) and I was told that it has a local surf gang who can be quite aggressive towards 'new faces'.

Have you seen "Bra Boys"? It's a really good film and exposes some of the surf culture down in Sydney.

I'd pick Coolangatta over Burleigh (well I do anyway but don't surf ) More beaches so if the surf isn't great on one beach, you'll probably find it round the corner. The Pro Championships held each year there must do it for a reason Much friendlier surfers as well (from what I've heard - no personal experience).

i say if you like it..go for it! there will always be some idiots at some beaches..it's part of the culture.. however..majority of surfers are freindly happy bunch..and they are used to the tourists aswell. so they are used to new people moving to the area....up and down the coast. surfing and coast life esp up that way is transitional new people come and go.

i've been around them all my life ..up till recently!..not that much surfing in canada..tho it can be found..

PS.. i've not been to margaret river...but it is a bit of a surfing destination place with aussie surfers so it must have something going for it....i have known a few who have lived there for the surf.
