We have just returned from the UK, seeing family even 6 years on the heartbreak and emotions are just as strong. The reality of it all has kicked in too, due to family illness weve been twice in 12 months the airfares alone from australia have cost us $19,000  , hopping back and forward to UK is not an option for most families.

We watched the series, found it very annoying at times. EG. Why when cost of living is discussed were the only factors given dining out and free parking at the beach, why didnt they go into what it will cost for healthcare for your kids:frown: or a grocery shop:ohmy: or an airfare back to the UK. Didnt see anything about schools either although I really felt if that had been done it would have focused on the pretty colours of the school uniforms rather than the standard of education. Climate was very glossed over too, didnt see any filming in bushfire, soaring temps, drought etc. Jobs info seemed to lack of a lot of detail, licences for a start.

Nice glossy carefully chosen footage of select parts of australia, not really that useful in terms of day to day life here.

Not reality then. I haven't seen it, but remember some show like this when I was in the UK. This is a good post and I don't like the way OZ is sold in the Uk.

I see that there has been lots of discussion from carpenters and skilled workers. We are Brisbane property developers and are looking for a skilled carpenters/handymen to work on some of our houses over the next 6 months. We may be able to include in the package a free (very basic) furnished 4 bedroom 1 bathroom home 6km from brisbane city centre. To start as soon as possible. We can supply tools. To apply, please go to our website www.familyfriendlyhomes.com.au to send a private reply.

Hello forum, (this is my first post so be gentle!)

Yes I watched the carpet fitter show and nearly fell over when Nadia said you could earn 50k GBP a year in Aus fitting carpets. I can believe it in the UK, if you work in London and do lots of hours like that guy. I know cabbies in London take home 1000 GBP/week in their pocket so why not carpet fitters.

I work in IT and have looked at salaries in Oz and unless you're a CTO or SAP specialist or something you can't earn 50k GBP/year. So I was thinking of retraining as a carpet fitter... until I found this board and this thread and found out that Nadia Sawalha must have got her AUD and GBP mixed up. I even found a 'carpet installation supervisor' job in Sydney on careerone.com.au that only pays AUD 55k year - so I don't think I'm going to fit carpet for a living after all...

It also annoys me that they are showing these potential emigre's houses that would be way out of their price range if it wasn't for the fact they had a huge slab of UK equity to take with them. I seem to remember one guy who was going to earn 16-20k GBP/year being shown 200k GBP houses - that's all well and good for UK emigrants but it paints an unrealistic picture of Oz as somewhere where everyone lives in a palace.

The responses in this thread seem to suggest that this programme should be viewed as not really more than light brainless entertainment for dreary january mornings. Unfortunately more easily influenced people might take BBC daytime dross as gospel (like my mother 'ooooh son you should be a carpet fitter in Australia...'!!!)

Hi Mikeybee, I am Australian and most of my friends live in nice 4 and 5 bedroom 2 and 3 bathroom homes. People who have good jobs can reasonably afford to pay off a loan for a nice home if they budget. I agree that you should investigate before changing trade to carpet fitting! All the best.

if carpet fitters can earn that then there should be some hope for us in queensland hubbies a plumber gasfitter thinking of training in air con? watching the programme houses look fantastic but all depends on wage he can earn to determine what you can affored to rent or buy?
dont know wether i will be able to work as well as unsure about childcare costs etc guess we will have to wait until we arrive to find out more theres only so much research you can do beforehand

I like the comment the butcher from Luton made about Clarkson - "is it normal for teenagers to ride their motorbikes on the pavement with no helmets?"

The info is fantastic as even people like me can understand it (!!) but it was getting lost in here among the carpet fitting info........so I've moved the majority of posts to a new thread:
BBC Wanted Down Under - the UKNova Download thread!
Hope this is OK with everyone, might make things easier to follow :)

Do a search on the names in other threads and it just gets more and more suss.

Yes me too. Worked with BBC twice in last year/18 months. Got 2 complimentary videos of the programmes each time. Standard practice so it's weird they're not doing this for a programme like this.

I'm not supporting a conspiracy theory, but it is very strange that they don't get a video copy. Although it really should be a DVD copy. We no longer have our video recorder as of last month.

We've been in Brisbane for just over 2 years now, soon to be citizens.

Just to let you know that you would find very little be way of jobs advertised for floor layers as it is generally a trade that is self employed.

In terms of wages/rates, it is very much dependant on what type of flooring is being laid, and in what style of property. As is the same in all trades, the more experienced and specialised you become. the greater the potential to earn.

Haven't seen the programme, although may have a look at the 'nova' stream to see what all the fuss is about.

Sounds like a touch of jealousy against someone at the top of their trade, who can command top wages.

All the best to all those emigrating, especially to Brisbane, fantastic place!!

I got given the entire box set of the show I worked on! I was really chuffed.

I haven't seen all the shows but not seen a nurse one - only a midwife one! Which I LOVED! for the obvious reasons....:)
