Re: BBC 2 - Ten Pound Poms
After watching that I can now understand my mum longing to come back and live in the UK. She was a £10 pom who arrived in Adelaide in 1963. I remember her talking about the conditions of living when they arrived and practically lived in tin sheds. I figured as she was 14 at the time and grew up in Australia, has an Australian husband, children and grandchildren; that she should think Australia as her home. I didn't understand why she wanted to come back to the UK so much when Australia is such a beautiful country and all her family are there. Well after watching that programme and seeing the emotions of others who; like my mum came to Australia on a ship, lived in those type of conditions and grew up in that era, I can now understand how my mum feels. I actually just called her to tell her that too.
