BBC 2 - Ten Pound Poms

BBC 2 are showing the programme Ten Pound Poms tonight (Sat) at 20.20 People on BE have mentioned this programme before. It tells how people in the 50's and 60's got on when they made the move from UK to Australia. Well worth a watch, I think.

Thanks for the tip, I'll grab it on UkNova soon ... :)

I've met several £10 Poms so it'll be an interesting watch I'm sure.

In todays money 10 pound in the 1950's is worth about 200 pounds so it's not too far off as it seems :-).

I don't know by the time we have paid agent, meds police check, tra and visa fees we are down about £3,500 that without flights.

Just watched it and some parts was really sad. At least when we go and leave friends and family its just a few hundred quid and a 24 hour flight back to see them. these people never saw theirs again. And the old lady who came back to die. Sad

well its cheap if its £200 but from the program it said 6 months wages, so that's quite a big chunk

Just watched it. My dad said he has watched it as well. Looking forward to discussing it with him. His family went out on the £10 passage in 1961. He is now back here.

Re: BBC 2 - Ten Pound Poms

My mum and dad were £10 poms and my mam is currently here on holiday so she has been reminiscing about the time she spent here. We are on the gold coast and mam lived in melbourne for 2 years 9 months but certain things here remind her of her life back then.

Apparently, they had to stay for at least 2 years or they had to pay the full fare back.

The thing that most surprises me is that dad came out first, got a job etc and then wrote and asked mam to come out and marry him and she came out on her own! (this is a woman who doesnt even like answering the telephone).

According to her though she had the best time of her life on the cruise ship on the way here and I dont think she wanted to get off in Melbourne.
