Seriously though, are the imported Whole Wheat Biscuits really like weetabix in the UK? My daughter won't eat weetbix here. I am also looking for proper Readybrek - the quick cooking oats and Uncle Toby's are all too lumpy. Can't buy Readybreak here unless you can find it at an expat shop. |

Annual Holiday
Australian Employees get an extra 8.6667 weeks on full pay after each period of 10 years continuous service (sometimes 7 years applies, pro-rata). This means that the average worker effectively gets almost 5 weeks paid holiday per year, averaged over a ten year employment period. (A Portable long service leave is available to building and construction industry employees who change employers regularly) Superannuation Almost all Australian employees get an extra 9% or more paid into a personal superanuation fund for them, on top of their wages. Some get higher amounts if the employer also funds a company scheme. Minimum wage UK is £5.73 ph ($13.96 at 2.4359 FX rate 31/10/08 4:20gmt) Australia is $14.31 per hour |

Mr Hagan said he was used to personal attacks following his nine-year battle to have the racist term "nigger" removed from the E.S. "Nigger" Brown Stand in Toowoomba, named after the city's first international footballer. It is believed he received the nickname because he was particularly fair-skinned. |

Just looked up Darlie/Darkie - apparently it originates from Taiwan. Sold all over Singapore; I thought I'd seen it here too but then I do frequent Asian areas.

I used to collect the golly badges. The first record my mother bought me was a 78 (now that gives away how ancient I am) called "Black Sambo", and I can still remember the lyrics!

Re: Basic differences between Aus and the UK
When I was back in UK last year, We went to a hobby/ craft farm. I saw the most beaugtifully made Golly family for sale. Not old but brand new.
The artwork was just beautiful. There was even a grandma sitting in a rocking chair. I didnt see it for the old connotations people associate with it, just the incredible beauty of them. |

Back to differences between UK and Australia, and somehow I missed this during the migration process
In the Uk you dont get attacked by flies heading for your eyes and mouth, and then find out you have to wait till December for the dung beetle to pay their part in natures cycle to get rid of the little bleeders !!!!!:mad::mad: |

Tax - Higher rate of tax payable in Aus is 47% compared to 40% in the UK, but VAT/GST is 10% compared to 17.5% in the UK As for choice, that seems to be an often quoted complaint about Australian supermarkets (along with lack of ready meals) My opinion is that the lack of choice isn't that big a deal. So there are 4 washing powders to choose from instead of 12 etc. I think many people tend to buy meat and vegetables from additional sources like markets, butchers etc than in the UK too. Arguably in places like Melbourne there is a much greater choice when you include all the ethnic food outlets. People probably eat out more too. |
