What Polly said and National Australia Bank www.nab.com.au because :
1. Banking is free no matter how much money you deposit each month.
2. Interest rates on savings accounts on call are not too terribad.
3. Huge network of branches that you may need initially for bank cheques and the like for capital purchases.
4. Visa debit card as standard and good online and telephone banking.
5. Because unlike people who suggest banks like HSBC with 1 branch or so, you don't have the indignity of having to bank at the post office on the odd occasion when you need to. You would understand that comment if you met my miserable local post office staff or had to go into the main shopping center where for some reason the line snakes out the door.
6. You can easily open an account from the UK prior to arrival.
It's basically the best option imo for a migrant who can then change banks easily after should their own personal banking habits be a bit more specific.
But consider opening a raboplus account as well and keeping any capital sums in that. At 6% on call as standard on up to $200k it matches many banks term deposits and can link to your NAB account. www.raboplus.com.au
