Default Bank Requesting Friends in OZ

I've just completed an application for the bank which has come back asking that I cant use people in the U.K.

Well I dont fancy asking my friends at work at this moment in time.

Has anyone else come across this problem ????

What are you talking about.? What type of application?. Why would a bank want to know about friends?

They usually ask for a relative or close friend in Aus - threw me at first, but it seems its not really a reference, as they don't contact them, and its not as a guarantor. I was told they just want proof that you know someone, and maybe if you disappear owing moneythey may contact that person regarding your whereabouts.
I don;t like the idea, I feel my finances are noones business but mine, but I suppose, when in Aus, you have to do it the Aussie way.

Yeah, its been on here before - probably when I was kicking off about it! I was told by an Aussie that it was quite a normal request.
