I came over to oz and was pulled with over weight baggage most check in staff dont bother you, i had to pay a freight company to send it over, stupid some people might say but there was stuff i wanted that i needed over and i did not have time to repack and do other stuff with my bags, well it was a long story.

wonder what my chances where in going back to the uk would they care as much or do you think i would have same problem i was about 15kg over.

I know when i was over in oz last year on holidays i had a bag 28kg and also another bag not sure what weight so do you think they will let me go this end or might have same problem, i did not think of it going back i just wanted the stuff when going over.

i know i will be here in oz for a while yet but wondered if its just luck on what check in staff you get or have they just got more strict on it, i know when i was looking around in the london airport the baggage some people had was unreal.

Most airlines allow 20kg as standard.

When we emigrated we used Singapore who allow you 40kg if you have a valid unused miogration visa. You need to let them know when booking. We had over 10 cases/baggs between us (2 adults and 2 kids) so were allowed 400kg!!!!! which is loads

If you fly via the USA they go by number of cases and not weight.

Singapore airlines were fantastic and really good with kids. Better than BA or Quantas based on my own experience of long haul.

How can you check your baggage weight before getting to airport? Can you just go to any airport and ask to use the scales?

Put your all gear on a set of bathroom scales. Take it to Boots and put it on one of their weight machines. Have a friend who flys very regularly and he done it. If all else fails ask a airline very nicely and they might doit for you.

Exercise in lateral thinking.

Buy a bathroom scale. Weightyourself holding the luggage. Weigh yourself without the luggage. Deduct one from the other.

Don't try to weight just the luggage as you will introduce variables that will not give an accurate reading..also by weighing yourself and having an idea of your current weight will tell you how accurate the scales are reading.

Singapore Airlines allow 30kg from Oz to Europe in economy - even tho they only publish 20kg on the ticket. You can verify this by phoning the airline and asking how much per kilo if you go over 20kg - I did this and Singapore said no charge up to 30kg, thereafter its $30/kilo. Not sure about other airlines but maybe you have to balance the price of a ticket against how much luggage each carrier will let you take.

They did weigh our hand luggae tho. (7kg allowed)

My mum also did this from UK to Oz with Sing. AIrlines and they said she would be Ok up to 28kg but not to go over 28.

Thats 40kg per person not per bag.. surely???

we flew with emirates they allow 40kg as long as you tell them you are emmigrating. however make sure no one single item of baggage is over 27kg or they will askyou to buy another suitcase to spread the weight around. not emirates fault. the baggage handlers in the uk suffer from bad backs.

Just checked flight prices (going in July, returning for Christmas) and found the cheapest to be Austrian airlines at £650 pp - not bad for peak seasons both ways. But they only give 20kgs allowance - just rang to see if there was any special allowance for emigrating but alas no. But they did say our baby gets 10kgs. Do other airlines let your babies have a luggage allowance if they do not pay for a ticket?
