Baggage Allowance for Emigrating with Qantas
Hi all just wanted to see if this is right that we might only have 20kg baggage allowance as we booked our flights through expedia.Called the London Qantas office and a rather snooty bird said we would only have 20kg per person as we booked through expedia. I explained that we were emigrating and she said we would have to pay £20 per extra kg over the 20kg???
Is this correct or is she having an off day??? Please can anyone help me as starting to panic???

Generally nowadays only Emirates and Singapore allow extra free of charge.
Some others - like Qantas - offer extra for a special migrant fare, others just charge for the extra. If you had booked through Qantas you might have got a migrant fare, but they are usually more expensive than the normal fares.
When the extra is allowed its generally only on a permanent, un-validated visa.
An airline makes no money on the extra luggage, and loses out on carrying cost-effective freight, so these days they are relcuctant to allow what has always been a perk.

I'm surprised someone hasn't said "You could also fly via the US and get 45Kgs each" It is normally mentioned every time the subject of extra baggage allowance pops up

It is on Singapore, BUT you must have a PR visa. We only have provisional so no extra allowance. Will be sending 2 extra 20kg cases by airfreight (Excess Baggage) at about £100 each, which is way cheaper than excess baggage on the flight !! Thanks for the tip from another BE contributor. Will save having to wear the same shorts for 12 weeks until our container arrives !! ....will now have 2 pairs of shorts !!
