The scare surrounding cellphone masts has really gotten out of hand recently. The jury is still out regarding the long-term effects of exposure to high field strengths, but that is really beside the point unless you intend to build your house on stilts right alongside a cellular antenna.

The first thing people should be aware of is that radio waves obey the "inverse square law." That means that every time you double your distance from the energy source, the intensity of the field diminishes to one quarter of its previous level. In practical terms, that means that the field strength you are exposed to while actually using a cellphone in close proximity to your body is far greater than that from a cell tower even just a few yards away, even though the power of the phone is much lower than that fed to the mast.

Second, even if you do follow an extremely over-cautious 2-mile rule, are you going to move home every time a new celltower is erected within that 2-mile radius?

It only seems to be cellphone antennas which have attracted the media hype. The field strength from a main UHF TV transmitter is many times greater than a typical cellphone antenna, and approaching similar frequencies at the high end of the band, yet we don;t seem to hear anything about that.

In other words, I wouldn't worry about it! :)

Hi there,

Ive just read your link.

We have powerlines going through the estate in which we live. Fortunately though our house is far enough away from them. But dont you think they are everywhere???!!! :confused: What can you do??!! :confused:

Presumably there is also a report somewhere saying the jury is still out.

We all have our own opinions but I think that if you stay away from everything that could possibly, at some point, maybe cause you an illness, there would be no where to live, nothing to eat etc.

You only get one life, enjoy it without worrying about something that might happen.

I'm sure there is a report somewhere saying "the jury's still out", but while they are, I don't think I personally would like to risk my children's lives untill they decide to make their minds up.......
