Thanks for the comments guys and gals.
Can you get cleaners that climb steps? PS: I just looked at the link in TimberAU's post and I guess you can. |

Re: Automated Pool Cleaners
I have a Kreepy Krawly, works great, up the walls and steps. They do need to be 'fine tuned', angling the jets correct and make sure the hose is at a 45 degree angle to the krawly when submerged. It also allows the surface to be skimmed at the same time as it is cleaning the bottom.

I think that although the guy told us that the direction the thing moves is random it isn't true, i think the way the hose lies effects it and when it gets to the corner furthest from the skimmer box the hose will be lying in a position that will encourage the thing to move away to the other more often than not.. not great problem as you can reach in and steer the thing to the right place..
Also any of these things will reduce the capacity of the skimmer box to remove surface debris |

Something like that. I have a Hayward thingy at the moment and it doesn't work very well. I think the turning mechanism gets blocked very easily and it ends up getting stuck. Big leaves will also screw up the water wheel that drives it.
I'm thinking of getting a new one and I was wondering how people got on with theirs. I still use my old faithful (the 'hubby'). When we do get one we'll be getting the bag that fits in along the hose to collect the leaves so the skimmer box doesn't get too clogged up. We have a lot of trees around us. |

many of the pool companies, do not like creepy crawleys or barracudas, instead they try n sell ya the cordless hoseless thingymjig...
cant remember the bloody name, but they reckon its ace, cos if the water level is low on tut skimmer box, you can still clean.. similar to this i think.. http://www.directpoolsupplies.com.au/category12_1.htm http://www.directpoolsupplies.com.au.../featured2.gif The idea of an automatic pool cleaner is that you don't have to go out and do it by hand. That one doesn't solve that problem  Nice try though. Hope you're not on commission;) |

No offence Timber but that looks total crap. It's no different from the basic set up you get with a pool and that bag doesn't look like it would hold a lot. Also it says it conserves water more  The others don't waste water so that's twaddle.

That's interesting because I've been told that the Hayward is the dogs bowlocks and not to bother with any of the others.

I'm not impressed. It clogs really easy and over time the turning mechanism seems to have gotten worse. I give it a service from time to time and it does improve for a short while. When I originally got it, it used to climb the walls but that only lasted a couple of months. And it's always had a problem with the shape of the pool floor. I've got a kidney shaped pool, so the floor is bowl shaped at one end with the shallow end gradually sloping into it. It spends 90% of its time down in the deep end.
I personally would not recommend it. Gutted. |

Our Barracudda goes up the wall, steps etc, we have a pebbledex finish and it is fine. The pool is always in mint condition, with the chlorinator and the Barracuda.
