Well it seems obvious that the confusion seems to arise from the Australian figure for net tax take being compared with the marginal tax rate in the UK for a given income...apples & oranges...hence the title of the thread.

Nor that....

When people make statements such as the above, they should give some examples, such as the above that I did.

I have quoted Woolworths prices in Australia, even though I feel they are more expensive than other options. But they are easier to locate the current prices.

All i know is it was fill your boots time at Vic Market in Melbourne yesterday, so many things in season right now. Box of fantastic Mangoes, 18 for $15, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, peppers, snow peas, oranges all at very low Kilo prices

Exactly.

Besides, as I made the point before how can anyone compare NI with medicare, hardly the same benefits at all, for a start one covers your pension and one doesnt.

No, there is a upper income limit, then you only pay 1%.

My bro is a Very high income earner, when the tax went to 50% he was ranting and moving to OZ till he found out the top tax bracket kicks in so much lower he would be worse off overall.

Also remember that many Australian employers, especially public sector contribute much higher percentages into your pension plan than in the UK.

So when COF said:

are you trying to say the tax take on $70,000 is actually 30%, or do you agree it is more like the 21% ?
