Default Australian Immigration Bill

Does anyone know if the proposed change to the waiting period for PR is contained within the current bill being debated (headlined as asylum off-shore processing) or is it a completely separate piece of legislation to be looked at later in the year?

Are you sure you mean PR and not Citizenship? Which as far as I know is in a bill actually entitled citizenship.

When does this actually take affect and is it definitely happening or does it have to be voted on or something?

We'll be too late for 2 years anyway, I'm sure it will be 3 as we are still in UK, but would be nice to know....

Cheers,

Sorry - yes poor typing. The waiting period for PRs to become eligible for citizenship.

Reading this thread from June it would appear that the bill you're referring to could commence late Jan 2007, but note the quote regarding who this may apply to.

Thanks - but it's not the Act starting date which I'm interested in - more the debate for the bill which will create the Act.
I just wondered if the proposed change in PR waiting periods to become citizens is contained within the current migration bill being debated (and likely to be defeated) or whether it is a distinct and separate piece of legislation to be debated later in the year.

I see your way of thinking now. If the off-shore processing is defeated would this take out the changes to the 'PR to citizenship' requirements? I don't know if they are part of the same bill. Have you searched the aph website?

Different legislation.

It's unusual for migration and citizenship legislation to be merged.

Following Pollyana's link above suggests that it is a separate peice of legislation.
