Australian 'Holiday Days'...........
I've just noticed on an Australian calendar that I've been sent that two of the Queensland holiday days fall on my children's birthday's!!!!
The first one is 'Anzac Day' on 25th April and the second is 'Royal Queensland Show' on 15th August. Please can someone tell me what these days are about and what, if any, celebrations take place on these days? And do these celebrations always take place on these dates? Thanks in advance.......C x  |

hey shiels
* ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during the First World War (1914-1918). As a result, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride for all our men and women who have fought and died in all wars. That day is ANZAC Day - 25 April. * the Royal Queensland Show is actually called the Ekka, an annual show in Brissie, and held at the RNA Showgrounds in the inner-city suburb of Bowen Hills approx 2 kilometres north-east of Brisbane's city centre. very popular, with around 600,000 visitors - attractions include fairground rides, sideshow alley, animal parades, woodchopping competitions, agricultural displays and equestrian events. SHOWBAGS - around 500 different showbags available for visitors to spend their money on and enjoy samples of brand-name products, the bags range from $2 to over $50. *however - depends on where you live as to which 'queensland/show day' you have off e.g. the ekka is for brisbane, but if you live on the sunshine coast theres a 'nambour show day' for those working (yes its about where you work!) in maroochyshire, and a caloundra day for those working in caloundrashire - havent quite worked out where that ends yet??? (even tho i live in caloundra!) hope that helps, J |
Re: Australian 'Holiday Days'...........
The battle at gallipoli (Turkey) was when the English sent large amounts of Aussie and Kiwi troops onto gallipoli beach, knowing full well we would be slaughtered.
Which of course we were. As aussies/kiwis our lives were seen as lesser, therefore we had to take the brunt of the turkish force to make way for the english troops who were watching safely tucked away on their ships. ANZAC day is to remember those who perished. It also represents what being Australian is all about - standing by your mate. |

Not quite how it happened. The British, French and ANZACs landed on the beaches. The British suffered over 20,000 dead, the French and ANZACs, 10,000 each.

ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Instead of retreating, the english troops were then ordered to fight, losing also. What resulted was one big win to the turks. |

Your comments are offensive to the memory of the people who served in the conflict, whether British, Australians and New Zealanders. |

What resulted was one big win to the turks. 17 - British submarine E15 runs aground in the straits. 25 - British Empire and French forces make amphibious landings on the Gallipoli peninsula. Landing at Cape Helles made by the British 29th Division and elements of the Royal Naval Division. Landing at Anzac Cove made by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). French forces make a diversionary landing at Kum Kale on the Asian shore. 26 - Naval operations: Australian submarine AE2 becomes the first Allied vessel to pass through the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmara. 27 - Anzac: Under the command of Mustafa Kemal, the Turks mount a counter-attack but fail to drive the Anzacs into the sea. 27 - Naval operations: British submarine E14 passes through the Dardanelles to start a successful three-week tour. 28 - Helles: First Battle of Krithia British and French forces suffer 3,000 casualties for little gain. 28 - Anzac: The Anzac landing is reinforced by four battalions from the Royal Naval Division. |
