IT - Australian Experience - Yes, required!
#1
I just had a call from an Australian recruiter. She called me because I had applied for a job and I'm assuming she liked my resume/skills.
Then she asked me....do you have work experience in Brisbane? I said well, Miss, I have Melbourne experience, New Zealand, Dublin, London, Holland...bla bla bla.
Oh, I'm sorry she said, because the client wants Brisbane experience. Wow, I told her, well, I'm an IT guy and the technology is the same everywhere, but I'm assuming there will be client facing...so I understand, but I worked 2 years in Melbourne and 2 years in..bla bla.
Hmm, I see, but they want Brisbane experience. I just told her OK and buzzered off.
for the record, the lady didn't even know how to speak English properly! Her accent was so bad... and her English worse!
Now I ask myself..why on earth would a Brisbane company ask specifically for Brisbane experience! Do they have something special that others from London/Dublin/Melbourne/Auckland/Amsterdam etc dont have!!!???
And I guess all of Australia is like that. Well, they have warned me, I didn't believe them, but I guess they were right. Now I do.
Now I know why I am not getting many calls for a job. They should put a new requirement on the visa process... AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE (2 years not enough so more please)!

Sorry, had to spit my guts out, now I feel better.
Off to apply for more, maybe an open minded company posted a job...
Cheers

Do what I did, make sure the decision makers aren't Australian! Then you might find they're not so fixated on Aussie experience.
My first job in Brisbane I was interviewed by an Englishman & a Scotsman - simples!
I agree, 'Brisbane experience' is a ridiculous concept!

Yes, I am not in IT but I do have a large team and we are recruiting for some roles at the moment. It would be ludicrous to ask for Brisbane experience. In fact, when it comes to my occupation (accountants), I am told the talent pool is virtually non existent in Brisbane. I think we would jump at the chance of a UK trained and experienced accountant, particularly a London financial services one.
I am q bit concerned with the sifting that our HR team do, I think they could be throwing out good candidates because of some silly criteria they have decided upon.

Yes I agree. I cannot imagine why. Maybe there is some other hidden reason which I cannot foresee and its an excuse?

Tell them you worked with loads of Australian contractors in London and they were all from Brisbane.

Welcome to Australian Recruitment Consultants. The most useless and talentless waste of space not occupied by real-estate agents

Best ways of securing a Ram pack on a ZX81 (they will ask the classic 'blu-tack vs wooden frame' question, be warned!)
Good luck!

It's pretty simple, as you may have heard Brisbane lags a bit technology-wise so they need skills that aren't necessarily in demand elsewhere. Pepper your CV with some of these are you'll be sorted:

B1K3R, in Brisbane I'd suggest you get in touch with this guy:

Paul's an English guy and very well respected as a recruiter by many people I know. Certainly has operated in the .Net area in the past, probably still does. I don't think you'll find a better recruiter in Brisbane.
