try www.thrifty.com.au , we came back recently from brisbane we had a mitsubushi magna{family car}it worked out at about £24 per day,we paid for a full tank of fuel at the airport so we could take the car back nearly empty it saved trying to sort out fuel close to the airport and saved us 5 cents per litre doing so
hope this helps

We used Cairns Direct (www.cairnsdirect.com), these guys arranged excellent rates through Hertz.
We picked up a Ford Falcon (only 900km on the clock!) in Sydney and dropped it off at Cairns airport. 22 days for $AUD757 inc unlimited milage, prepaid fuel and full insurance. (we even dropped it off 3 hours late and didn't have to pay any extra !)

Re: Australian car hire firms
There is one major difference between car hire in Australia and car hire in Europe that you should be aware of.
In Europe you usually have to specifically decline CDW if you want to risk hiring the car without theft or damage insurance. In Australia the CDW that you get automatically (they call it LDW here by the way) does not provide full protection. Usually you will be asked to pay up to about $2500 if you prang the car (or someone else prangs it and gets away). You can reduce this to about $800 by paying a rather large premium.
As always - read the small print. $20 per day hires will almost certainly not include insurance.

Hi we used www.rentnewcars.com.au and cannot fault them they expalin about the insuracne and the follow up and customer service I got was second to none and that is a high rating coming from me. You can go on a on lline quote I shall be using them for when I first arrive in Oz.
They where also the cheapest by far at the time.
