I'm lucky, I fall into both categories (well not the whole of the UK, just the bit I come from). But it was more that I wanted to live in Australia than I wanted to leave the UK - otherwise I would have just moves somewhere else in the UK.
I wonder our we, as a western nation, the unhappiest. Do we look to emigrate more than the other European nations, and if so, why? Any psychologists in the house?

I think I probably agree with you - in which case there is a warning to the adventurous types - when you realize that this is "forever" it begins to pall. I think I fall squarely into the adventure category - after PNG and UK this was going to be another stop on the way and it has turned into the last stop and my sense of adventure hasnt gone away, hence the little things which began to irritate me now bug the heck out of me. Adventurousness can be a disadvantage as well I reckon!

Not sure i fall into either category. I married a NZer, went to NZ to spend time with my new family and ended up in Aus by accident due to husbands job.
I agree that everything starts to annoy you when you are unhappy in a place.

Anyway...
