Are Aussies really leaving the UK in droves?
Recently, there’s been a great hullabaloo in the media around the claim that Australians are leaving the UK in their droves. It’s been seen by the Brits as confirmation of their recession woes. It’s been seen by the Aussies as confirmation that the Lucky Country really is that much better than Britain after all.

So when you say hullaballoo you were actually just quoting the article and there is no hullaballoo at all, except in the minds of the person who wrote the article in a magazine hardly anyone has heard of, let alone read I think Aussies are travelling to and from the UK in just the same numbers as they ever have done.

My son commented on this the other day - he's in UK and thinking about buying a house there, just waiting for the market to bottom out. None of his friends have come back afaik. I would think that they are coming and going pretty much the same as ever unless they have lost a job and were coming back cashed up anyway. I think it is more a case of doom and gloom journalism than reality.

The UK Times newspaper gives the reason as:
and stated:
The numbers arriving in the UK are also down by about 50%.
While major financial companies are shedding jobs in London, Australia’s economy is significantly more robust.
With a A$21.7 billion surplus, Kevin Rudd, the Prime Minister, is forecasting modest growth and believes that he can stave off recession.
