Default Aussie holidays

Driving home from work today (in the dark!) and got to wondering about holidays in Australia.

As a general rule, we take a couple of weeks off in the summer (British summer) but we often take a few days off at this time of year (in conjunction with the various public holidays). Our offices were very quiet today and the carpark won't be busy again until the 8th January.

How does this work in Australia, when the Xmas holidays and the summer holidays are at the same time? Do Australians have a 'winter' break? Does the whole country grind to a halt at this time of year?

I'm curious to know.

Cheers

And a Happy Xmas to one and all

David

It depends on whether you're at work or at school. (Remember that the Australian school year follows the calendar year.)

If at work, you will receive Xmas holidays; if at school, you will already have broken up and be well into your summer holidys by the time Xmas arrives. (School holidays generally run for about 7-8 weeks over December and January.)

The entire country doesn't grind to halt, though it may feel that way sometimes.

As a guide, my daughter has told me that her classmates are off to various places this Summer Christmas holiday.
One family to Disney USA for 2 weeks, another over to Perth for 3 weeks, another to Asia for 4 weeks, etc etc.
And her friends down in Sydney, are up to the Gold Coast for 2 weeks.

So it seems just like the UK summer holidays, everyone is off somewhere
