The closest I've found is Ozbargain but it isn't a patch on MSE

One of the things I first noticed about Australia is the massive swings in the price of things - there can often be no rhyme or reason for this ; it's blamed on distribution and scarcity of service. For instance, we bought a car in Darwin when we first arrived and discovered if we'd driven it up from Perth it would have been 1/2 - 2/3 of that price. A chip in the wind screen earlier this year - got a $800 quote for a replacement and then tried another garage on the offchance - $175.

Even the main food shops -Coles and Woolworths will be dollars apart eg, on spring onions today - $4.99 in Woolworths today compared to $1.99 Coles.

Shopping around is key although this takes up time - you do get better at knowing whether a price is feasible but often feel as though you are taking a wild stab in the dark deciding if something is a good deal. In the UK the density of the population means product/service pricing is economically efficient and big deviations are corrected quickly.

All the kangaroos... Sorry I'm not going to give the honest answer if I did this thread would go the same way as a gazillion others have. I can read all the pro's and cons elsewhere.

It is indeed and you can often haggle a bit too - for big ticket items. Prices are dramatically different depending where you are - especially the mining towns where things have sky-rocketed.

On a similar note can you recommend where I can check out prices of second hand cars? Moving to brissie in a few weeks and want to sort a car pretty quickly when we arrive and need to do some research. Thanks guys!
