Even the Big Mac index doesn't have Australia at the top anymore largely due to the declining dollar. But we all know exchange rate is a bad indicator of a countries expensiveness because it doesn't take into account what locals earn and their ability to spend.

I have to prove nothing.Check the figures out. I was a little surprised it was tops. Norway of course is in a far better position than Australia having a very wealthy Sovereign Fund and probably best safety net of all countries.

Hardly matters if the headline is right or not. Most expensive or second most or third.Australia is very expensive which ever way you look.

Norway was a reality check IHO

My post was in response to your's stating that Australia is the most expensive country in the world when it is patently not

Norway is a great country that has managed its resource very well (and we have not) and their SWF is a great example of this but Australia has over $2t in super which is basically there for the same thing. It will be over $5t in my lifetime

I know that as a leftie, you are going to say that super is shit as the state should provide for pensions but there it is. I'm on track for a pretty comfortable retirement - without the need to have state help. That's not important to you I know, but it is to me

There is no question Australia is expensive but it is also no question that many 1st world countries with a high standard of living and high social costs are expensive places to live

It's not a coincidence

Singapore is mentally expensive if you go for anything that isn't local and basic (which can also be good BTW)

That's the same report I posted. Different summary though. ..... and how it figures Australia is the most expensive country is beyond me. What because a 2 litre bottle of Coke is and bogans love 2 litres worth of Coke? How about petrol. On that list its got to be the biggest expense in most peoples lives. Australia certainly is not top. They also listed the minimum public transport fare. Well I don't know about the minimum but a weekly on Sydney Trains is a damn sight cheaper than a weekly on the London Underground. This is a bad stat. A minimum fare never hits the back pocket. A weekly does.

These stats prove one thing though. You'll see Australia going down the expensive list. But for us who live here its not getting any less expensive. It's getting less expensive for tourists though because the dollar has declined. What's the point of posting these stats? For tourists. They need a better indicator of salaries v costs. As it currently stands all these stats say is Australia's dollar is declining and the US dollar value is increasing.

BTW. Beer is going down the fx rate list. Its saying 'come to Australia if you need a drink on US dollars". Even the PM is getting involved.

I relay what The Age research showed. Not backing off by any means as Australia is bloody expensive for what it is. I doubt it matters whether Australia is top, it is very close to it. While super may sound the hottest game in town to right wingers , fact being of course is unlikely to continue being the rort it is at present into the future.
Besides that too tempting for a government to keep their hands of further down the track.

Norway of course pays all well. At least in that country one is assured the essential things in life so hasn't the same onus to save for old age or illness as in Australia.

I reckon I don't need to prove a thing once giving a source. Whatever I have yet to meet a visitor to Australia that in any way thinks most anything is to be had at value.
