Aus: +125,000 jobs in last 5 months
OK, I'm going to NZ, not Aus. Got that out of the way.
But I just had to say, IT people: stop whingeing about the crap situation for IT jobs in Aus. The Aus economy is humming along and created 125,000 jobs in the last 5 months with GDP forecast to grow +4% this year.
I don't want to get negative about IT people (go on! I hear you cry) but in my long corporate experience in the UK many of them struck me as gloomy and not the most positive of people. (Others were a good laugh.)
Unemployment in Aus has peaked and will head down to to 6% by early 2003 - source: some chief economist I just saw on CNBC.
This will be good for the IT and most other sectors.
Best wishes

what is it about you whinging non-IT peple that think us very happy IT people are whinging about ? We are merely discussing the situation as it is, not quoting useless government statistics that are made up to make themselves look good.

Your answer shows exactly what I mean, Mr Whinger. You don't like to read good economic news and are happier having a moan.

Quote from The Australian 15th March:
'Unemployment fell by 40,000 in February, reducing the jobless rate from 7 per cent to 6.6 per cent, as total employment rose by 20,400 and 19,600 people stopped looking for work, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported yesterday.
The number of part-time jobs rose by 43,300 but was offset by a loss of 22,800 full-time positions. The unemployment rate of 6.6 per cent was the lowest since March last year when it hit 6.5 per cent.
Economic growth of 4.1 per cent last year has left the number of full-time jobs no better than in January 2001.
The rise in employment surprised financial markets, which had expected a fall following the rise of 65,000 in January.'

The Economist poll of economists predicts GDP growth of 4% this year.

From an informal look at seek.com.au this seems to be true. Of course, with
statistics, you have to filter out the "real jobs" from the "ghost jobs", and whether
part-time jobs should count as "half a job" or "a job".
For experienced people, this should be good news. But for new IT grads, it's still
bloody murder out there. Companies are not desperate enough that they have to
advertise for inexperienced graduates.

I heard that 98% of statistics are made up on the spot!
And I am in IT, but I wouldn't like to think I was a whinger, in fact, I don't care
what the stats show, I'm going out there to give it my best shot and I will succeed
because I always do. Maybe not first time, but I get there.

Yeah, good point, but it's not like you get the chance to review your mistakes and
make it better next time!
