I haven't seen it in Australia, but I've seen the northern version in Canada. The Aurora Borealis is very pretty.

We thought we saw it in Tasmania last year, wasn't very impressive though because it just turned out to be an odd cloud at sunset!! Would love to see it one day, think you will have to be in the very South of Aus to ahve a chance of seeing it

The Aurora Australia (or Southern Lights) are a (mostly) polar phenomenon. As such you would most likey see them on or around Antarctica. If you look in the pics on the link you sent, you will see the habitation dome in the snow. Although in a period of high geo-magnetic activity they would be visible over a wider area.
