Their lovely, thought about one of them a couple of years ago, ended up with a merc v class, petrol though. Don't know what to do with my Audi, seem to be worth a mint in Oz.

Apart from any possible expense of shipping you may also find difficulties with parts and servicing.

Unless it is a classic or particulary special it may not be worth the hassle.

It will cost you more to take her than she is worth!

There is a thread which someone will post but, my ASBO 57 Focus ST has to stay in anticipation of a 5 year old 4x4 with 80kms on the clock.

With the additional container cost and the registration cost, it isnt worth it, cars are expensive in Oz, german cars especially, however the transport costs outweigh the potential profit.

Only my opinion, I am 3 months away.

You may also need some modifications to meet Australian requirements and the resale value of an import will be less than for an Australian spec. model.

'BigApe' post a good guide on this subject....try the search facility.

Chances are you would break even compared to selling it in the UK and buying over here once you add in all costs of shipping & compliance. Not to mention the sheer hassle of doing it when there is already enough hassle in emigrating. Looking back now I realise that it was a pretty selfish thing to do while my wife handled pretty much everything else.

If you really do want to pursue it then have a read of this article and try out the Excel (instruction included) to calculate a pretty close estimate on the total on-the-road to on-the-road costs of importing your car. Note that most shipping companies on tell you about the costs they incur not the costs after the car has left the docks in Australia.

Unless you're in the outback then Audi parts are not that hard to come buy and there is an after market here and some 3rd party specialist Audi garages. AUDI Spares in Melbourne are awesome and a good example of what is available. I have had my TT serviced by them several times and they are just great.

One thing to note which you may not be aware of, in Australia cars are far less of a status symbol then they were in the UK. No one really gives a toss if you have a nice Merc or a Porsche. My advice would be to sell the A3 in the UK, come over here, but a big 4X4 Hilux and get out in the bush and mountains. That's what people over here appreciate.

Hope this helps

Al

Another thing you might not realise is that all Australian cars are coated with a uv protection film. As the uv is much higher / harder here.

You often see Peeling cars, where the protection has been damaged and the sun has got in and damaged the paint finish.

Absolute rubbish.

I won't bore you with the technical details, but the peeling your are on about is due to delaminating caused by either using poor quality lacquer or poor workmanship in the preparation.

And if its LHD (just in case) it will need to get converted to RHD! A cost of around $30-35k

On a slightly different note, what about motorbikes?

I've got a Honda VT750DC2 Shadow and im considering selling it. But if it doesnt sell, then I may ship it over.

Obviously this wouldnt cost much to convert from LHD to RHD

The only slightly annoying thing would be the conversion from MPH to KPH as the cops appear to be a stickler for speed over there (hidden cameras et al!).

Is it worth shipping motorbikes? Is biking different over there? I'd heard rumours that they'd banned filtering (lane-splitting) in Victoria...I dont know if its true though.
