ATO - Do unpaid bills ever expire??????

Hi there,
This is a bit of a dilemma for us......
We left NSW in 2005 owing about $5000 to the ATO. We set up a standing order for regular repayments which somehow got overlooked when the 12 month standing order expired...
Anyway we have always planned to return but 1 year has become nearly 4 and we are buying a house in the Uk so who knows when we will go back to live - if ever :(
Does anyone know if these outstanding ATO bills will find us or if we will be dragged off by the beagles if we ever step foot in Sydney again??????
Thanks,
Emma

I guess when your TFN is registered again on their system (if you ever get a job on your return), I'm pretty sure sirens will go off and lights will flash. Even if it doesn't(don't hold your breath), I'm pretty sure that if you ever applied for credit, it will be discovered that you defaulted on payment of the debt to the ATO (which no doubt is recorded with the Credit Reference Association of Australia). It might be well worth dropping a line to the ATO and see what can be arranged.

I reckon it'll still be there plus interest (which will have a rate that'll make a loan shark blush).

It actually isn't that bad, I was expecting much worse, but it is only 10.13% at the moment. But it is currently at its lowest rate this century !!!
