Hi all
not sure where to put this question so here goes. I will be a new grad so on a wage of about $25000 mu hubby wont be working and we will have 2 kids age 13 and 6. We will be in Qld I am aware we dont get assistance from centrelink but I have been looking at homes to rent and the figure is scary I am very concerned we wont be able to survive and hence our dream sink. So is there any assistance out there to help us when we first come out?

Hi Avril, I don't live in QLD but that seems VERY low, what area of work are you in? As far as I know (being on a 457 visa myself) there is NO help for people on this visa, you 'can' get tax breaks like LAFHA but need to negotiate with your employer BEFORE coming to Aus.

I hope someone from QLD can tell you if this is a realistic salary to live on. I have a feeling it may not be but get the figures and see what you think. Maybe search the cost of living threads as they give exxamples of bills etc.

25 grand a year to live on ??? your kidding, a cheap rent here will cost you 300 a week, we used to pay 450 a week...

Ask yourself if you could survive on 12,000 pounds a year in the UK with no government assistance?

If the answer is no (and with 2 kids and 2 adults to support I presume it would be), then there is no chance in Aus no matter where you live. Just $400 per week rent on its own comes to over $20k per year.

Sorry, but it seems like you need an extra income or a different sponsor willing to give you more $$ to make it even vaguely feasible.

I thought there was a minimum they could pay you on a 457 visa and although it isn't great it is quite a bit better than $25k, new graduate or not. I am too tired to google this morning but you should look into that.

There is a minimum and it's a lot more than $25000. Perhaps she meant 25000 GBP? That would be a lot closer to the minumum.

Either way, you will likely find it extremely difficult to survive on $25000 for a family of 4.

you guys are right - it appears that there is a minimum base salary.

from Clause 5 of page 3 in this document (http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skill...ccupations.pdf) it appears the minimum base salary is just under $62,000.

It makes sense as the 457 is designed for skilled workers who cannot be found in Australia already, so their salary should be reflective of that...

Even new grads get paid more than that! I really hope you mean 25,000 quid not dollars.....

To answer your question, there will be no assistance at all while you are on a temp visa.

And to echo what everyone else said you must be referring to pounds not AU dollars. I had a look through her posts and I see that she's a newly graduated nurse so I'm sure there's no way she would only be making $25,000 AU.

Also, if money is a big issue could the posters husband get a job? Or is there some reason why he's not working. I'm not trying to be snoopy I'm just pointing out that if was able to work even part time then things might be a bit easier.

Yep it's illegal to employ someone on less than the minimum wage of about 50-60k AUD, it's all stated in the DIAC website

If you are going to work as a nurse you might be eligible for salary packaging things - where you avoid/reduce paying tax on certain items. You'd have to ask your employer whether they do that and if it's any use.

My place allows salary packaging but unfortunately none of the things are of use to me - such as buying a new car. I think I read somewhere on here that somebody could salary package bills. Not sure really but it may be worth having a look.

hi all oops a major blonde moment last night.

I forgot to do the conversion to dollers it will be around $50000 It must have been all the stress with the studying for my finals next week the ilets and the house sale visa medicals etc.

I must admit when talking to hubby later I did the same thing and got us all into a tizz and started to panic about not being able to afford to survive.

Hubby has no qualifications at all and is unwilling to get any. He has lots of experience in glass toughening but no actual paper qualifications so we are being realistic about him struggling to become employed.
We dont want to come with our eyes closed and it all be a big shock to us so no rose coloured glasses for us which should make the transition easier for us.

Seriously.....unless you can buy a house outright or, at least, have a large deposit then $50000 will not go far.

If you intend to rent then you need to realistically look at the rental costs for the type of house you want in the area you want to live.

I don't know about benefits etc. but my wife and I spend far more than that and we don't have a mortgage.....or any kids living at home.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do, and your expectations, but your OH will have to get a job of some sort if you want a reasonable standard of living.
