It varies a lot as you can see from the replies thus far. Just be prepared for every case scenario and do as much homework as you can before you leave. The situation is not Oz specific - the same problems would be encountered no matter where you move to. Re recruitment agencies - my experiences have been negative.

Good luck

My girlfriend and I came to Oz without jobs. She got hers within a month and I got mine in five weeks. She was told about the job by a family friend who worked at the hospital. I went through an agency (Carcorp in Moorabbin www.carcorpaust.com.au), they specialise in Automotive jobs mainly at dealers. I got a job selling New Toyotas at a Franchise Dealership.

We arrived 2 weeks ago and my partner has had a job offer already (and 3 more interviews lined up so he can bargain ), but I think mine will take a bit longer - he's a developer/planner which is in demand out here

Hi, my name is Julie Thompson and I'm moving to Adelaide with my husband and daughter on 21st January 2007. I read your information about getting a job in Oz and wondered if you might be able to help me find a good agent. I'm looking for an admin post preferably as I've got 20 odd years experience in that trade. I would be grateful for any information you may be able to send my way. My email address is: {contact member by PM}
Best regards, Julie Thompson

Best edit that address before you make all sorts of new friends...

Perhaps a new thread might work better for you here...

When I arrived I had to go through all the paperwork to get my qualifications recognised again. Started looking after two weeks. Got a job within the week as a teacher in a full time temp post for 6 months but within 1 month had a permenant position at the same level I had in the UK. Used an agency for the temp job. Got the the permenant post through an advert on the net.

Although the wage is lower than the UK, due to cost of living etc. I am better off.

Came out with no post to go to.

I guess it depends on what field you're in. My OH is an analyst programmer and was offered the first job he applied for just a couple of weeks after we arrived here. There seems to be quite a lot of work in his field. It probably depends where you're going in Oz too, we're in Melbourne, I would expect the bigger cities to have more work opportunities.

As I was walking out to the car after the interview my mobile rang. It was the agent telling me she was not going to send me to that particular job as she thought it was beneath my abilities and if I was interested I could temp at the agency as their receptionist/resourcer until the perfect position came up. 2 weeks later I went to work at another hospital as a temp in the renal transplant unit but left when the recruitment agency called me up to say they would like me to come back to work for them in their training department as the learning and development coordinator.
So, long story short, started working after 8 days here. Totally new line of work now and it's a great place to be. And if your recruiter is doing nothing for you, then you need to find one who will. If you are in Adelaide, then give me a ring and I'll let you know who the right agency is for your particular type of work. Certain agencies do particular types of recruiting. The one I work for does mainly call centre and government. No IT or trades, but we are part of a network that includes agencies that do place those people.
Wife looking for job in Adelaide
I and my wife arrived in Adelaide 3 weeks ago. I already have a job (came on a 457) but wife needs to get a job. She used to work as a customer services officer also worked a bit in a call centre in UK too. So any admin job will suit her. Mighty appreciative of any info/help in this direction.
