Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
Hi
We are a family of 4 (kids aged 11 and 3) looking at areas such as Ormiston & Cleveland and further down to Redland Bay. We are wanting areas with nice large houses with decent sized gardens and family friendly suburbs, basically the aussie dream house. Our budget would be around $800k but we will be renting first anyway. Good school is a must and as we are catholic we would look at the private schools as well as state. My husband will be working in the city but also on the GC occasionally and as he commutes an 1hr 45 mins each way already would consider living about 1hr commute away. Looking at websites such as realestate.com executive living in city suburbs you are looking at £1mill + for property with not much land so that is why thinking of moving to bayside plus the fact being near water will make us feel like we are living in oz. Any advice is greatly appreciated. :) |
Re: Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
I live in Wellington Point a short stroll away from Ormiston College, perhaps one of the better private schools in the area. There are many other quality schools though and the public ones have a good reputation. Walking distance to both Wello Pt and Ormiston stations which put the train into the city at just over one hour. Laughably, its quicker to drive by about 20-25 mins but parking is then an issue.
The GC is easy to get to thanks to the straight and clear run to the gateway motorway. Essentially, you could probably not go wrong in Cleveland, Wello Pt, Ormiston but as you move further to Victoria Point and Redland Bay you should realise there is no train stations there for a commute. Ultimately prices do reflect the desirability of the area but are still within reason. |
Re: Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
Hi there, we live in Wellington Point and our Daughter goes to Ormiston College which is a FANTASTIC school (in my opinion). There are also several Catholic schools in the area - Mary Mackillop is one in Birkdale that springs to mind as having a good reputation - the Catholic schools generally sit inbetween State and Private school as far as fee's go.
Ormiston, Cleveland, Wellington Point are all great areas and you will get a good size home/garden/pool within your budget. The more land you wish to have and the closer to the water you wish to be will obviously affect the property you are able to buy. Around this area I would also consider Birkdale and Alexandra Hills - people put us off of those areas when we arrived, however, we've been here for 6 years now and just like anywhere there are some great parts. No train in Alex Hills though. Redland Bay would be good for commuting to the GC but for me personally I always feel it's a little removed from the rest of the Bayside area - maybe that's not a bad thing?! It does have a great waterfront though and lovely parks beside the water so not to be disounted. Good luck. |

Re: Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
I assume you mean $1mill + rather than £1mill + ?
Without disparaging the bayside which has come on immensely, with your budget I think you should also consider some of the great family areas closer to Brisbane which IMO usually have better government schools (and great private schools), better transport, are less sleepy and more in touch with inner Brisbane life - while still getting a large house and a garden. Obviously cheaper outer areas like the bayside will still give you greater volume of house and land for your money if that is your primary goal. A few quick random houses as rough examples: Something like this in Tarragindi maybe (CBD 9km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...indi-107176409 Camp Hill (CBD 7km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...hill-107170344 Newmarket (CBD 5km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...rket-106778561 Herston (CBD 2km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...ston-107098062 Coorparoo (CBD 4km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...aroo-106981187 The Gap (CBD 9km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...+gap-107147831 http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...+gap-107099912 Wooloowin (CBD 7km): http://www.realestate.com.au/propert...owin-107123170 |

Re: Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
With $800k to spend I'd be taking fish.01's advice.
That budget might buy you a lot of house in Vicky Point, Redland Bay or Mount Cotton but to me anyway, these areas seem so much further away from things than even the rest of the Redlands. That in itself could also be a selling point I suppose. But for $800k you could find youself in some very nice areas of Brisbane with all the amenities that go along with that. |

Each to their own, but if I had to choose between one of those suburbs and Bayside, I'd choose Bayside every time. That said, I do hate the City and couldn't stand the idea of raising kids in some of the 'burbs that you mentioned. (I'm fringeside and chomping at the bit to escape further.) Also, I wouldn't consider Alexandra Hills (even though it's getting out towards Bayland.) Though I understand the local features some good bands and beer... I'm not sure if that's what the littlies would appreciate.

I'd go with fish too. People go on about hating the city - in my pocket of Coorparoo, you could be mistaken for thinking you were in the country, so many trees and bushland, large blocks and heaps of wildlife, yet only a couple of km's to town. Best of both worlds.

What are house prices and schools like there, Kim?
My ideal Aussie home would have a big outside deck with views of bush / trees and wooden floors inside. Homes would be at the top of our budget though  |
Re: Areas in Brisbane Bayside area?
For no other reason than gut instinct, I feel drawn to the Ferny Hills area or surrounds. Does any body have any views on this part of Brisbane?
