Already in debt then!!
I think I read somewhere on here that the banks charge you for looking after your money - or in your case - having a bank account ......

I get no monthly charges on my ANZ Everyday banking account :-)

Yep, it is the norm here (Australia) for you to pay a fee each month for the privilege of giving the bank your money. What you need to make sure of is that there isn't a whole list of other fees & charges for doing anything else with your cash - ie withdrawing, transfering, using an ATM, paying by card in a shop, going in to the branch, etc etc. Time to read the small print!

1) ATM Balance Enquiry $1.5
2) ATM Withdrawal $1.5
I MUST get around to closing that bloody account.

The thing that pisses me off every month when I read my statement is when the Mrs goes to the ATM, checks the balance of the CBA account, then makes a withdrawal costing $3. Then you have the monthly charges which are usually about $15.

It's been well publicised on here about the charges so it shouldn't come as a surprise. It amazes me why people open up accounts months before they get here. There is no point so don't do it

I can see why people open accounts in advance - we did it too, the idea was to be able to transfer money at a good rate in advance of our move. Also to have something done ahead of time, to have as much as possible done before arriving. You just have to stick fifty quid in or something to cover any charges. (Although I have a feeling that we did not get charged for ours until it was activated, which didn't happen until we got here.... don't quote me on that though!)

Well said. Equally I dont see why people get carried away and apply for TFN's, medicare and so on during "validation" trips (aka holiday). It only causes potential problems later on. A little more self control with the excitement of it all would be well advised I reckon

Re: ANZ Bank Charges !
I agree with opening up an account but you only need to do it a couple of weeks before you arrive so that you have somewhere to transfer your money to. If you have no money to bring over then it takes 10 minutes to open an account when you get here.
Hey, we made the same mistake and got charged the monthly fees so I'm just saying I don't want others making the same mistakes.
As to TFN's etc, absolutely no point in doing these. All of the official stuff takes very little time to do when you arrive for good and it gives you something to do until the jet lag wears off

Re: ANZ Bank Charges !
but it's not $5 a month for us, it's $15 as we have three accounts (individual one each plus joint) AND the Bankwest one pays interest on your money whereas ANZ dont.
