You might set it 18 but it'll never get there, just keeps the condensor running permanently in a vain attempt to achieve that temperature, which equals mammoth bills.

I set ours to 26 or even 28. Takes the humidity out of the air and does a bit of cooling, condensor runs only intermittently, which equals small bills.

I know it's nuts! 5 years in Indonesia and we all just got used to sleeping in that temperature. When I'm home I just have the window open (even in Scotland over New Year!), but here we are on quite a busy road so have double glazing (no insect screens either).

 Ours is set to 26C. Lower than that and the kids complain of being too cold and having to wear jumpers indoors. I can't imagine 18...that must be a fridge.

Alot depends on where you live in Australia. You need advice from those living in dry hot locations! I lived in Adelaide for 5 years where we had the very high temperatures you talk about and the whole house heats up. A fan is inadequate on its own as all it does is circulate hot air, and the temperature is already above body temperature. As your sweat it evaporates more quickly in low humidity so a fan does not speed up that process and cool you down as well. We now live in Brisbane where you feel warmer at lower temps because of humidity, but fans work a treat, especially on the ceiling, and I have hardly used aircon for the entire summer. It doesn't go above body temperature.

In Adelaide I would have it charging away and get $700 bills. I must admit to my quarterly bill now being a steady $360 for two of us in a four bedroom house. It was twice that in Adelaide in the summer and also in the winter, because you will pay stacks more to HEAT your house in winter than the cool it in summer. Winter is a bigger bind in my opinion as you need heating everynight in Adelaide and probably Perth for around 4 months a year....

To get back to some tips:

Set the air con to a slightly higher temperature and use fans. Once you get temperature down to around 30C you can use fans to boost its effects.

Close your windows and blinds during the day - roller blinds look awful but are excellent for this. Once the temperature outside is lower then inside, open the house up for a few hours.

Brick houses act as radiators - close the area off where you have the aircon system, and live and even all sleep in there for the few days when it gets above 40C if you are unable to sleep elsewhere in the house.

Put on an old teeshirt and shorts, stand in the shower and then drip dry - you act as your own convective cooler! This brings instant relief and means you don't need the air con, but be careful of your water bill.

At night, put a wet towel over yourself or the kids. If you then turn on a fan you will be chilled as!! this is a great use of a fan even in very high temperatures, and costs very little.

Part of being in Australia is that it is unsurprisingly hot... It is the winter that surprised me far more, as houses are not geared up for it. Really miss central heating in winter even in Brisbane - daughter had really bad chilblains on her hands and feet last year in Brisbane!

Hope this helps..

Thanks Seabird and all the others with very useful tips. We had ceiling fans in our last two houses in NSW and they were fine except for a few days in the summer when the mercury hit the mid to high 30s. Never had air con.

Our last home was less than a 10-minute walk from the beach so most days we benefited from the sea breezes.

What I'm struggling with in WA is when you get over a week of temps in the high 30s or low 40s and very little breeze and the heat is stifling. And we are not close enough to the ocean to get relief from the sea breezes.

I also know what you mean about the winters in Australia. Like you, when I first moved here, I was shocked at how cold it can get and how houses are not designed for the winter. The insulation is awful.

We went straight to Harvey Norman and bought a really good quality Rinnai gas heater and it is brilliant at warming up the house quickly.

We used small electric oil-filled radiators for the bedrooms and kept them on a low temperature all night to keep the room cosy but not too hot.

Totally agree. We found 23-24C too cold even when it was in the high 30s outside. 18C:confused:

18! brrrrr if we do put ours on it never goes below 26, that's plenty cool enough.

We prefer our ceiling fans :)

18 is perfect for me. I even run the car aircon during winter here, just love that cold fresh breeze on my face. Anything over 25 is too hot for me, and I stay indoors. ( tha's 78F in old money, which is a heatwave in N.Yorks where I grew up )

My office at work is adjacent to the server room, the temp in there is a constant 18 degrees too, best place to be in summer. My Aussie workmates come in shivering, but I am happy in my shorts and t-shirt.

The latest bill for 9/12/11-10/2/12 - ie 64 days is a whopping $392.15.:frown:

Not surprised your freaking out at that bill:eek:
This being my first summer in oz I've been paranoid about turning our a/c on...but thought our bill (14dec-17 feb) of $159 was high until I've just read this thread.

I'm obsesive about turning lights and appliances off and I've changed all the globes to energy efficient ones....a/c is not the only thing that eats electric.

Re: Anyone with tips on saving money when using air con?

I have one unit in the bedroom, which I have used about 3 times this year to cool. Set at 26 but I only put it on for about 40 mins whilst I go to sleep. If I get hot in the day I tend to have a dip in the pool, (when it isn't green as it is atm with all the rain,) as it never gets above 24 degrees, so after 15 mins I am cooled sufficiently for a few hours.

My leccie bill for the last quarter was 0ver $500, but that is because I've had to have the pool pump on more or less continually, and also the tumble drier. It has been horrendously wet all summer, and shows no signs of stopping. I even bought a second airer, but things don't dry fast enough inside as it is so humid.

You have to be kidding if you think that's a big bill. My last Winter bill was over a grand.

Yeah, that seems to be the irony. We think the summer bills are high because of the a/c, but wait for winter and that's the surprise. We had a single panel heater running on cool evenings (with a thermometer and switch off feature for after it reached the right temp in the room) and our first bill was $120 higher just from that heater alone.

Like I said I've been paranoid about switching it on after hearing how expensive it was to run a/c, we have only switched it on when its been over 36 outside and in the afternoon/evening time to cool the kids off so they can get to sleep and then it goes off again.

But being new here I had no idea how much it cost to run (never needed it in the UK) or what the average bill was here to compare it to, maybe I'll turn it on a little more now.

The flip side is because the house isn't "cold" when I go out the heat doesn't bother me

Get SmartEnergy at home, attach a SmartMeter to your home's electricity meter, it helps identify how much energy you are consuming, when to turn appliances off and eventually helping you save more money.
