Hi, I wondered if there are many people on this site either in oz or the uk who changed career so they would be eligible to emigrate?

We've looked at various options, the most recent being that my OH goes as the main applicant on a 457 visa. He is a driver so would need to be sponsored. We have(we believe) exhausted all options for companies prepared to sponsor. He is turning 43 shortly so after 2 years on a 457 he would be 45 & therefore too old to apply for PR. So we have given up(for now).

I am probably the best bet for getting us in(or I would be if I met the criteria!). I am 34 & used to be a screenprinter a few years back(for 4 years) Was thinking of getting back into this asap anyway. If I could get a qualification in this occupation & a couple years experience behind me maybe then I would be eligible? Screenprinter is on the SOL but NOT the MODL so Im unsure if I could reach the points necessary.

Any thoughts??

I would be interested to hear if any others have changed career/completely re-trained in order to emigrate.

I am a registered childminder & have my own business from home. I have lots of certificates from courses i've been on & tons of experience. I am also a mum of 4 kids! My husband is a sales manager for a constuction company, loads of experience, but no certificates. Between us, we are unable to apply for a skilled visa as our jobs are not on the SOL list (or any other list)! We have been told by many agencies that if I could go to college & re-train as a childcare co-ordinator, or something else, then I could possibly try to apply for a visa. But then I have to get the experience of that behind me first! Daft, isn't it!! I am 35 & my hubby is 40!

How many points do you get for screenprinter? Is fairly easy to work out points once aware of this!

Have you looked at possibility of studying in Aus? This would get you there sooner rather than later, and getting PR after your course isn't too hard!

Im hoping to go over on my partners 457 visa (sponsored nurse) and re-train once in OZ as a radiographer. Currently in IT and whilst everyone says that IT is needed, its not my specality thats needed (Programme management/General department Management).

The thing that I have worked out, is that the course in OZ is such a lot of money (120,000AU$)

Hi, Yes, we looked at studying in oz for me recently. Found a 2 year coarse in brisbane. Trouble is, when I looked at the possibilty of PR after the coarse would finish, I still wouldnt get enough points! You need 120 I think. Because my hubby would be 'too old' we couldnt count any extra points from him either.

I get 60 points for screenprinter on SOL. With points for age/english etc this still wont be 120. Infact, even with recent experience it STILL wont be 120! I just dont know how else to make it happen.

Hi, sounds like you are in a similar position to us. We really feel we have looked into every possibilty going to emigrate but keep reaching a dead end. I think I would happily get back into my screenprinting as I used to love it(though I guess the industry is more computerised now). But I am getting the impression that we still couldnt reach the points once I had a qual & recent experience. In your situation its alot to go through to 'possibly' get in. Seems there are no definate answers on this one. I guess its down to how far anyone is prepared to go to acheive their dream.

Have you considered consulting an agent (maybe you have) but they can at least point you in the right direction - I'm not 100% sure but I think you can offer money to gain points as well - not quite sure how that works but I think you get it back afterwards - not sure how long though.


Most agents offer a free consultation so really you dont have anything to lose.

Its great to hear what others are doing. You are right, studying is VERY expensive! Though screenprinting was nowhere near as expensive as what you are going to do!

We did. It was them that pointed out my screenprinting experince could be a way in! Would never have thought of it otherwise as it was a few years back. But had thought of getting back into anyway as my kids are both nearly at school now.

Would happily go to oz to study(despite how difficult it would be with 3 kids & not much opportunity for my & OH to work fulltime), however having looked right into it, seems an oz qual wont be enough to reach the points needed.

Ive not heard of the money for points thing though...sounds interesting! Does anyone know more about this??

This is only from memory but I believe you pay $100,000 dollars and they keep it for 3 years - I think its worth 5 points but that may be all you need.

Do a search - I am sure someone must have more detailed information than me.

I have been wanting to live in Australia for 20 yrs now but due to commitments have never had the chance. 7 years ago my wife and I decided to go for it (as she caught the Ozzie bug) and to make sure she decided to train as a midwife having just had our two children now aged 8 and 10. She did a return to education course, intro to nursing and fought for a place on Midwifery place at Uni. She has now completed 3 year uni course (which we moved 250 miles so she could take up the place). We are due to move to Brisbane very soon and are all chuffed considering the effort and sacrifices we have all made over the years. If you want it bad enough make it happen!!

i am planning on re training as a plumber and going in to buisness with a friend for 18 24 months until wife graduates and we can start applications maybe a trade like this could help!!!

If you could find an employer in regional Australia who would be willing to sponsor you, and could show they can't find an Australian to fill the job then you should be able to get a Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 119/857) visa. They want qualifications equivalent to an Australian diploma (a full apprenticship is also allowed). As long as you have that, and they agree they can't get an Australian to fill the job then it doesn't matter if your job is not on the list. You have to stay with the employer for 2 years.

They don't normally have to prove "they can't find an Australian to do the job" for either ENS or RSMS. And for RSMS there is no "list" - any diploma level occupation is normally acceptable.
