Anyone married to a non Brit?
Hi guys. Since its mostly Brits on here and most of us are from the UK. Is anyone married to another nationality? Maybe an Asian or South American or even European? I am thinking more of a non native speaker. The reason i ask. My wife is Thai and i have lived in Thailand for nearly 5 years. My wife is well educated and has worked in media and advertisng for a subsidury(sp) of Satchi and Satchi. Her English is great. But the reason for this thread is. My wife has never lived in another country before. Certainly she/we have travelled. But its not the same. I know there is a big Asian communty in Oz. But back to my question. How did she/he fit in when you went to Oz? Any problems? Her/his first impressions? Ok enough for now. Just thought i'd ask. Thanks in advance for any feed back.

Yes and what they can do on a BBQ, with just a Witchty Grub, some bugs and a piece of lilli pilli is beyond belief.
Gotta go.... Shazzas dingoes have got in amongst the Galahs again.

My mate at work, is married to a Universty educated highly sophisticated Spanish girl... 15 years his junior i may add as well... Lucky bloke. Anyway the Spanish seem to all come from very close knit families. They tried living here first... she got homesick.... they lived over in Madrid for a while.... my mate couldn't cope with the language.... She came back here with him... on the proviso they start a family, which they have now x 2 kids... Lots of visitis from family in spain, and vice versa... Now 4 months into their 2nd child she has PND..... Not a good situation at all. I dont know whats going to happen there...
They met in the UK.... I've a feeling there could be a compromise of the last resort.

I am engaged to a British person, however he was born and obviously is referred to as Indian, before people realise from his accent that he is British.
He received his visa through yesterday and we leave for Perth in Nov. He has only spent 10 months continuously living elsewhere (Australia) and he cannot remember living in India (as he was 2 when he moved to England).
I can only speak for him (he doesn't post on here). He is Asian but Indian Asian and so he didn't meet a lot of other Indian's in Perth although there are a few. He did find this difficult although he does not segregate himself into a group - he just felt he stuck out a lot. Australia is multi cultural but obviously not as much as London where we live now. He didn't have any racist stuff happen besides 2 minor ignorant comments which, as he said, could have happened anywhere.
He did fit in fine in Perth, although the ignorant comment was when someone spoke to him like he was deaf and then realising he spoke English said 'Oh you speak English' to which he replied and (it still makes me laugh) 'I should do, I am from England' (we both got a kick out of that one...thanks saturday casual in betts and betts).
My OH had a fair few aboriginal's approach him but has not had so many in recent visits since he has had his hair cut short??? He is Indian from the tamil nadu area so I guess, the features can be classed as similar in some repsects. He never had any trouble though....
I will ask him for some more feedback tonight and post it...

Re: Anyone married to a non Brit?
Hello
My wife is Hong Kong Chinese. We lived in the UK for 8 years before moving to Melbourne, where we have been for the past 1.5 years. We live in predominantly caucasian blue collar suburb.
Our experience has been wholly positive. My wife really, really likes it here. She likes the people. Race is never an issue. Making friends has been so much easier for her than back in Blighty - in our experience, people are more open to making new friends.
It is difficult to assess what your wife's experience will be. My wife had already integrated into the UK and had taken on a great many Western habits. in the early years that was hard for her at times. So coming here was not a challenge in those terms. She still misses talking to someone in a 'Chinese way' for which I suppose one could extrapolate to a limited extent to mean 'Asian way'. She feels there are things that she can only say or express in Cantonese that English does not adequately express...and to be fair to us Westerners the opposite applies too.
Not sure if my comment on these aspects of life applies to other areas of this vast country. I hope it does.
Neil
