I think for a lot of people, missing the folks back home is the hardest thing to cope with, moving to the other side of the world can be a lonely experiance at first and not having you family and close friends there for support can be very hard... but i agree, Aus is a great place to enjoy life and most of peoples complaints about it seem pretty trivial and outweighed by the benefits. Even after almost a year i still get those 'bloody hell... i live in Australia' moments.. it took us so long to get here it still seems a little unreal sometimes but i love it and don't regret all the hassel it took to get here...

I've only been back in Oz a month and although I was originally an Aussie living in UK for past 30 years has made me pretty British as you can imagine. I got that 'wow' feeling yesterday when OH & I were walking the dogs alongside the sparkling blue waters of Williamstown (Melbourne) eating chips. However I do find myself missing things from UK that i really took for granted including OH's family, friends, shops, museums, the pubs, the comfortable familarity of it all really

I think you have to accept that in life there will always been wonderful (and crap) things everywhere and you just have to focus on the good stuff wherever you happen to be-and there's plenty of good stuff here in Oz

I agree, I get that feeling all the time, been here just over eight months now.

1. Just sitting in the park on the waterfront watching people sailing in the background, overlooking the ocean, eating fish and chips whilst the children play in the sun.

2. Bodyboarding anywhere on he sunshine coast in the blistering heat and warm ocean, having proper fun.

3.Sitting in the back garden supping a beer, barbecue lit up, kids playing in the pool. sun on your back.

4. Spending Sunday mornings playing golf, nearly every sunday.

5. Arranging a day at the beach, weeks in advance, a good chance the weather will be fine.

6. Watching my children swim in the school squad and really enjoying it.

7. Driving down the coast and seeing the "Welcome to the Gold Coast" sign on our way the waterpark/themepark.

8. Getting in my 3.6 litre V6 and paying a pittance for fuel and insurance.

9. Leaving my sat nav and CD collection on show whilst parking at the supermaket and not even thinking twice about it.

10. Waking up and hearing Kookaburras and watching rainbow lorikeets in the garden.

This place has so much to offer those that are willing to embrace it, I personally love it here, yes things are missed, but I feel that the same shit shinier bucket philosophy is a load of bollocks. It ain't the same shit, it ain't always shinier either.

But pound for pound if you have found what you are looking for then happy days, if not tough titty. at least you tried it.

All in all it is an experience that is your alone to treasure regardless of whether the place is for you or not.

I must admit the money thing (or more accurately huge change in tax) has been giving me the wobbles for the last couple of weeks.

Yesterday we revisited the list I made a while back, "Why we should move v Why should we stay here". So many reasons, most have nothing to do with money.

Today, my husband is going in to work to accept the transfer.

Watch out Sydney.

Good for you. Just embrace the opportunity and enjoy the ride, regardless of what happens at least you will have had the experience. Enjoy

Christ, never heard it described like that before, I'm not sure I like my homeland described like that (although technically my homeland in England, not "Britain" the jocks and taffs are more foreign than the Aussies).
