You lot should work for the Hervey Bay tourist board cos you're making me chomp at the bit to get there - your lifestyle sounds just want we're after. Can't wait to explore all the watering holes and cafes recommended.
One more boring question following on from my boring question earlier about banks: where is the best place to buy a car, Hervey Bay or Brisbane? I wonder if you get more choice in Brisbane? We're just wondering what to do when we arrive in January, whether we should stay in Brisbane for a few days after landing and buy a car or hire a car for a while and then buy one in Hervey Bay.
We'll be looking for a second hand car not brand new, a few years old I guess so any recommendations of where to purchase would be appreciated. Oh, also, cos I was a frustrated late learner who only passed on my 5th driving test I've only got an automatic licence so if anyone knows where to get a decent second automatic car then thats great. (I'm an OK driver I promise, you don't need to fear for your lives when I arrive in the Bay although my hubbie might say different!)

Thanks guys for all your info on Toogoom, Craignish, Dundowran Beach etc. Hervey Bay sounds beautiful, I suppose the only thing we can do is get there, and travel around the areas and decide which is the best for us. I think OH has already decided on Toogoom. I like the sound of it all!!!
I can't wait to meet you girls for drinks and make some new mates!
Cheers everyone

Try a thread on the barbie forum asking where to look. Theres an area to the north that we looked in but I can't remember the name - All it is is car dealer next to car dealer...
We got lucky and bought an old station wagon (first car OH saw!) which had enough room to get all the suitcases in. I was a bit worried but it's kept on going.

Yes the weather is just lovely today, once i get the housework done i plan to head out into the garden.
I suppose we have really put Hervey Bay up on a pedestal, and with good reason, but we should also discuss the down sides to the area. and probably the biggest problem is because we're considered regional, we have problems getting medical specialist here. We've come a long way in the last 10 years, and have some excellent doctors here, but we still have a long way to go. My mum in law has been seeing a neurosurgeon for the past 6 years, and kidney specialist for the past 3, so 3 - 4 times a year we travel back and forth to brisbane. When u do that in one day its about 8 - 9 hours of driving. We have an excellent team of ophthalmologists here now that have branched from the Sunshine coast, having a background in this field, i would consider them to be the best in Qld. I believe we have a good orthopeadic surgeon as well. You cant have Radium therapy here i understand. I think the hospital does chemo. The nearest MRI machine is 1 1/2 hours away. So as you can see, if there is a serious health issue, then there can be some issues.
It can be hard to get onto the books of a good doctor and dentist. public transport is a bit crappy i believe. And i dont think i would be walking great distances at night in Hervey bay on the weekends say. We do have the same problems as other places, though maryborough is coping a fair bit at the moment with night time safety.
Having said all this, i still think the good outways the bad. Those coming with kids, make sure you know who your kids hang out with. By a presence in their schools, get them into sport or community based projects and you should be right.
Even though we are a city, we still seem to hold that great community feeling. So even though we have our problems, i hope you all find that this really is a wonderful place to live when you get here.
Cheers
Donna.

Did you mean Maryborough was "coping" or "copping"?
There are always going to be problems. I live in a smaller town than HB, in NZ, and we have street problems at night. We've had fighting, assaults and even a murder. You just need to be aware of who's going where and help them get there and back safely.
Isn't it weird? A workmate of mine has a son who lives in Maryborough. Friends have parents who live in HB. We just sold our canoe and the people who bought it have family in Hervey Bay. We'd never heard of the place a year ago and suddenly everyone knows someone who lives there.
