Hi there.. I'm a nurse (Learning Disabilities - much to Queensland Nursing Council's dismay as they don't know what to do with us ) and I arrived in Brisbane last September. I work for Queensland Government's Disability Services and came on a 457.

It is a big thing moving to the other side of the world where you don't know anyone.. but we're seeing it as an adventure. We've got no long term plans.. not sure about staying for ever BUT we're definitely here for now! Best of luck with QNC, although I'm sure that you'll be fine (as long as you're not a LD nurse!!)

Best of luck

Hi there,
I am a nurse too. So excited abot our move to Brisbane when our visas are through. Mind you, only at the very early stages too. I sit the dreaded IELTS on 6th March. Don't know where to start with that one. Reading so much info about that.
I have a job in Greenslopes- Ramsay healthcare when we finally get around to going. As soon as visas are through we are off. Kids (5 + 4 years) are so excited too. Look forward to seeing how your timeline goes with all this visa stuff.
Great to keep in touch with folks going around the same time.
Sooooo excited......

Hi Hellsbells, we live quite close to Greenslopes in Yeronga.

I sat the IELTS thing and got 9's other than the writing one where I got 8.5 (soooo used to using a computer to write essays etc. that I struggled to write sentences without needing to go back and edit ) I only did the free tests available online as revision. You'll be fine

I'm a nurse heading that way too. Not too sure which part yet, I think that'll depend on where I get work. I've just had visa grant and sat IELTS July 2009. Just finalised QNC registration and I'm on the register when I do an online search.
If I can do it then so can you, as the OP says you'll be fine.
Feel free to ask if you need any info.
btw I used the Peter May 'practise ielts tests - academic level' it comes wi 2 cd's so you can practise the listening section too. I found it really difficult initially but after a few practise tests I soon got into the IELTS way of thinking.
Good luck with it all.

Hi
I'm British and currently in UK but I'm moving back to to Brisbane in 2 weeks. I'm 25 and would love to meet other ex-pats over there! Is there an organisation that organises events for ex-pats to meet and greet?

Thanks for all replys so far! And good luck to everyone. Revising for the IELTS test now... have done some free practice papers too on the net, so we will see!
Was just wondering about the nursing registration side of things... I am applying for the Queensland board of nursing, but apparently all the nursing boards are merging into one in July. Im planning to move in September, so will I have to re-apply again??
Would be greatful of advice.
Thanks!

We came over nearly 5 yrs ago and have never looked back.

If you fancy getting together sometime when you arrive just drop us a PM.

Hope to be there by the end of the year, so may well be in touch.
When OH worked in Greenslopes did you rent nearby? What is the area like. We are looking at areas nearby. I don't mind having to commute a short distance. Main thing is finding a good school for the kids - aged 4 + 5.
Trying to research different areas on the net- Calamvale, Wakerley. Although kids want to be near the beach.

Hi

We rented a place in Redland Bay when we first arrived. I would say its a good 30 - 40 mins drive into Greenslopes depending on time of day.

Bayside has some nice areas and good schools though no beaches as such....mainly mangroves.

We now live in Shailer Park which suits us better. Close to the freeway and about 40 mins away from the beaches of the Gold Coast.

Any other info you need just drop us a line...
