Anyone applied for a UK passport from Canberra recently?

Because it's the responsibility of the Foreign Office, not the Home Office.

When I first looked at the web site they said they were processing in 4weeks -- now the website info has changed to WITHIN 30 working days and the guy today said a MINIMUM of 30 days. If they'd provided accuarate information I wouldnt have tried to get it done in the time frame I had. It just all feels very inefficient for such an expensive service......

Then maybe there will be some questions asked about how British missions overseas are getting away with offering a service that is much worse than what is available in the U.K.

Nothing will change until sufficient numbers of letters of complaint start arriving on the desks of MPs at Westminster (are you an overseas elector?).

I just think it's shocking service. And the guy on the phone kept saying to me "It's British Government Policy" / "British Government Policy doesnt allow us too...." / "The fees for phoning us are set by the British government" ($10 to be told sod all)
Well, if the British Government are responsible they can also get the flak!
(Though I did feel the guy on the phone was too ready to blame the invisible British government and not take responsibility for some of the questions I had about his departmental operations) I probably pissed him off so much I dont stand a chance of getting my son's passport this side of Christmas.......

Re: Anyone applied for a UK passport from Canberra recently?
I am flying to the London and then Amsterdam on 10th September 2007 for a 6 day business trip. My UK passport expires on 19th April 2008, which means that on entry to both countries I will have just over 7 months validity on the Passport.
Can anyone confirm if the UK or the Netherlands (if anyone knows) requires more than 6 months validity on their Passport for entry. Has anyone travelled with a passport close to the cut-off point ?
I'm a UK citizen in Australia on a current PR Visa.

However, you do have enough time to renew your passport. I believe that the British consulate renew from the date your current passport expires (within 9 months)

Thanks Katherine, very useful.
I have also picked this up from another source
Apparently as a UK Citizen you only need a British passport which is valid for 3 Months longer than your stay when entering the EU countries. If the UK were covered under the Schengen Agreement like the rest of the EU we would just need a UK Passport or ID card.

You should check with a more official source.

Dont worry. My letter has already been drafted!

Don't expect the current Labour government to listen so it is an issue you might want to bring to the attention of the opposition as well.
The point to make is simply that British missions overseas should offer a comparable level of service to what is provided to applicants in the U.K. and currently they fail miserably to do so.

PS I think an aussie passport is processed within a week. Is this an option for you if your hubby is aussie

Mine was sent in May, they finally charged my card over 2 weeks ago. So I guess it will come out any day now.
PS: I also don't understand why the British Passport doesnt have an online tracking system, they Oz and Irish ones do and you can check it any time and it shows what stage and % your passport is at.
