Tried to do this with the Ulster bank and my bank manager said it couldnt be done so I think I will try hsbc (how do you go about doing it ).
Not suprised! I don't know who owns Ulster Bank, but it isn't Australian. Even if you tried it with Northern, which is owned by NAB, I don't think it would help. Their systems aren't linked, they would charge you as much as any other (non worldwide) bank.

hsbc could work, I'd be very intersted what they quote you for the transfer,

Cheers,
JTL

Tranzfers are excellent; they may not be the best choice if you are moving large amounts of money, I don't know, I never had a large amount to move. But Tranzfers are very quick, have always given me reasonable rates, and unlike most places will move amounts as small as £50, which for people who are still paying bills etc in the UK is very useful.
I've been using them since October with no complaints, and have recommended them on here many times - not heard yet from anyone having problems with them.

NAB actually owns Northern Bank in Northern Ireland. The Ulster Bank is a different bank entirely, and is NOT owned by NAB.

Oh and NAB owns National Irish Bank in the Republic of Ireland as well.

Anyway, I don't know if opening an account with one of these in the UK would facilitate a transfer to NAB in Oz. I don't think they are linked like that.

Thanks for the correction JTL and I was really thinking aloud, wondering if you could transfer to NAB via their subsidiaries? We have a Clydesdale Bank in our town (formerly Midland which is now HSBC!) so when I'm passing I'll ask if you can do a transfer to a NAB account in Oz this way.
