PLEASE no getting at me for insulting aussies, I am just stating a fact, and it appears that as you have to have a load of trade papers and references etc to get accepted at least the brits you employ know what they are doing.
Yes Lynn, it IS a FACT. My husband did some work for an Australian couple a while back, and they said "thank God you`re English - at least we know you`ll turn up, and also that you`ll do it RIGHT. They admitted that the Aussies were reknowned for being unreliable and doing a "she`ll be shite mate" job!!!

Thanks for all your replies they have been most helpfull.
Sorry that some of you have had problems with trades men, we have that problem here too. The thing is that you get the cowboys that make it bad for the rest. Thankfully here I have a good name in the trade and dont have to look for work it comes to me, hopefully I can do the same in Brisbane,

Thanks again

Mark - a word of caution...

My husband had an excellent reputation in the UK, and like yourself, found that "he didn`t have to look for work, it comes to me" as you put it.

However, it is a totally different story here. It will take a long, long time for you to build up the kind of reputation you enjoy in the UK, and added to that, is the Aus equivalent of the "old boy network" - generally speaking jobs go to people who know people here. Example? My husband did some work for a garage a few months ago, just after we arrived. The owner was very, very impressed with the standard of work, and said he`d use him again. After several weeks passed, and nothing came of it, my husband phoned and was told "yes, your jobs were the best we`d ever seen, but the bloke who`s doing our work now is a friend of the Manager...."

Obviously this also happens in the UK, but please bear in mind that things happen VERY SLOWLY here - be prepared for a long, uphill struggle to attain that "work comes to me" position...
